Fascinating article. Grit comes to mind. I think he had to be born with it. I could see how this situation would be impossible for others to get out.
I like to think that his “grit” was just waiting for love and affection to release it, which happened when he was taken into his friend’s family. Also please note that the high school he attended is a small NYC school begun when the city formed many of these schools using existing buildings that had housed huge high schools. (I believe that there aren’t enough medium-sized schools but that’s a topic for a different thread.)

The foster/adoptive family and mom are incredible to provide the support that this young man so needed. I’m glad he found what he needed to flourish. It sounds like he has a bright future awaiting him!
It’s amazing what people can do, despite their odds. And the family who helped him deserves so much credit for taking him in.
He is apparently very gifted. I can only imagine what his college essays look like. Would love to know where he ends up.
God bless the family that took him in.
