NYT: Welcome to the Era of the $20,000 Family Car Insurance Bill

I thought $9,600 was bad…ouch.

Maybe someone can spare a gift link.

Yikes! The family with six cars??? Our kids never had their own cars until they were out of the house and on their own. I mean, you’re insuring SIX cars; of course it’s going to be a lot.

Hopefully that’s a gift link

If someone can afford 6 cars maybe they can afford the insurance.

Looks like every kid (n=4) has their own car. Moreover, kids with a couple of ‘moving violations’. Mom thought one dad had one too. Glad I don;t live in their town.

Ditto. Moreover, told my kids that any moving violation means no driving the family car until you are 18. Period.

We had five cars for awhile, including a Porsche, and I don’t think we paid over 2K. But they weren’t all new cars. 20K is insane.

Add some new teenage drivers and some moving violations and/or crashes across the various drivers to get a situation more similar to the examples in the linked page.

We did have teenage drivers and a couple of minor violations, but Geico doesn’t price up for the teenagers. At last they didn’t use to. This 20K seems crazily excessive.

Our kids didn’t get licenses until they were 21. We had 3 or 4 cars but our policy was only about $1500 or so. Once we sent the kids cars (SR year of college—old vehicles), they had to have it registered in their names and get their own insurance. They got discounts for drivers ed and being good students. Each paid about $1k/yr for high limit policies. i’m

Then was then and now is now. How much do you pay for house insurance compared to what your parents paid? How much do cars cost vs then? When I was a kid, gas cost $.25/gallon vs now???

When LEO son was 20, in 2020, he drove a 2007 vehicle, had a spotless driving record and was certified to drive both an ambulance AND a fire truck. We paid $3,600/yr just for him.

Our D23 wanted a car at school with her this year and we’ve agreed but she has to pay her own insurance bill. It’s outrageous between her younger brother and her.

Anyone reading this thread with younger drivers and an outrageous insurance bill should definitely check to see if Geico still doesn’t price up for younger drivers. We dumped USAA when they admitted they couldn’t compete with them because of that reason.

We have geico, our 2 oldest are off of our insurance, we are down to 4 cars, $12,000+ a year, 2007, 2011, 2016, 2020, only 2 have collision. This summer my husband got into an accident (moving into another land during heavy rain, his fault) and my daughter was in an accident the following week (hit the vehicle in front of her in sudden traffic, got hit by the vehicle behind her, so at fault for half). We had a good driver bonus on our insurance (we never claim anything due to some unfortunate accidents with one teen hitting a pedestrian (actually her shopping car but she insisted he call 911…) and my daughter totaling her car on a flooding road (no collision on the car, but in NJ if you end up needing medical care after an accident (she was fine but taken by ambulance to a trauma center due to the condition of her car wrapped around a pole) car insurance needs to pay. Husbands accident was $6500 for the other car, daughter’s was $13,000 total. We paid the $6500 oop and used insurance on my daughter’s.

Yeah but still six cars and multiple violations.

That’s really expensive, 12K+. We have had situations (though fortunately it’s been some time) where we’ve just paid to get the other car fixed, or ignored any dents on our cars. Of course, when the other driver insists to use insurance, there’s no getting around it.

We’ve been lucky, only a couple have gone through insurance (one woman had a company car). We’ve had 6 cars before (7 drivers), biggest fear is getting dropped. NJ has some of the highest rates in the country which doesn’t help.

Insurance rates greatly depend on the state. Liability insurance here in my state is not that expensive because we are known for being polite drivers, but comprehensive that covers theft can be through the roof! And try to insure an older Kia or a large truck with a giant catalytic converter…

We have three cars and 4 drivers. The most expensive to insure is the oldest vehicle. New vehicles are usually cheaper to insure because of so many safety features.
