NYT: Welcome to the Era of the $20,000 Family Car Insurance Bill

We have geico, our 2 oldest are off of our insurance, we are down to 4 cars, $12,000+ a year, 2007, 2011, 2016, 2020, only 2 have collision. This summer my husband got into an accident (moving into another land during heavy rain, his fault) and my daughter was in an accident the following week (hit the vehicle in front of her in sudden traffic, got hit by the vehicle behind her, so at fault for half). We had a good driver bonus on our insurance (we never claim anything due to some unfortunate accidents with one teen hitting a pedestrian (actually her shopping car but she insisted he call 911…) and my daughter totaling her car on a flooding road (no collision on the car, but in NJ if you end up needing medical care after an accident (she was fine but taken by ambulance to a trauma center due to the condition of her car wrapped around a pole) car insurance needs to pay. Husbands accident was $6500 for the other car, daughter’s was $13,000 total. We paid the $6500 oop and used insurance on my daughter’s.
