NYU and Fordham

NYU and Fordham are my top schools. Here are my stats, which are on the lower end for both schools:
88/3.5 weighted
1680 SAT

Essay talk about my struggle with anorexia but I also had two major back surgeries…impacted my gpa quite a bit (I was out of school for a few months because of this.)

Thanks for any help.

I am aware that my gpa and test scores are low, but I was still wondering if there was any chance whatsoever

Write good essays and you’ll have a slight chance.

Your GPA is low for both schools. SAT scores could really hurt your for both schools. I think NYU is definite reach and you may have a change at Fordham. The only way you’ll have a better chance is to have a lot of ECs and a really good essay.

NYU is out of reach, Fordham is a big reach.
Why do you like them?
If you tell us, we may be able to find schools that are similar and where you have a decent shot. :)

yeah between a 0 and 1% chance. also it’s not always good to write about topics that might make an admissions officer feel uncomfortable

Thanks for your honest answer, I was expecting that one. But I like that they have very strong English programs and are right in Manhattan. Lots of opportunities for publishing companies and such.

Thank you for the help!

I know that writing about those topics are a touchy subject, but how else might I tell admissions that I struggled with two life-changing events that greatly impacted my academics?

Higher sat score will increase your chances. I would say high matches

Chance back?

I have 2280 what are my chances at nyu neural science?

good ec, recs, internship, leadership, community service, etc…

good essay - had it edited by people

@adukutti: this is called “hikacking a thread” and it’s considered very bad manners - you must answer the question asked in THIS thread, then refer to your own thread (provide the link) to be “chanced back”. You need to create your own thread for your question/chance. :)

@andoniak: you need to be careful in the execution. “less is more” - evoke but don’t get toooo graphic. You can say you knelt in the bathroom stall, you can’t describe your throwing up. (Don’t go “I’d never do that!” - some kids do.) You have to insist on the steps taken to heal, on lessons learned, on how this impacted you and made you who you are and how that person is stronger, more determined, more congenial, more balanced, has her priorities straight…(etc!)… as a student.

Look into CCNY and Hunter; CSI Honors (and they have residence halls) would be a safety. For writing: Sarah Lawrence, Barnard and Hamilton if you’re EOP (and Kenyon, of course ut without EOP you’re probably out of luck, unless you’re first gen AND bring that SAT score way up). Not far from New York: Marist, New Paltz, Purchase. Good industry contacts: Ithaca.

Focus on the SAT. I hope you’re retaking in December.
Try to take the SAT2 Literature and Foreign Language in January to strengthen your application.

@myos1634 thank you, this was incredibly helpful. Unfortunately I will not be retaking my SAT; rather, I will probably attend community college and work very hard for a year or two in hopes of getting into NYU or Fordham at a later date. Thanks for your help, sorry if I wasted your time.

@ andonika, why do you think you’ll go to community college? There’s a HUGE RANGE of colleges between NYU (one of the best universities in the country) and a community college. You have 1680 - you CAN retake that SAT test - and you have a very good GPA, 3.5. There are LOTS of schools you could go to. It shouldn’t be “NYU or nothing”, right?

@MYOS1634 thanks for your help!!
