Nyu cas

Does it have a high rank ? Why is it popular despite the high tuition rate? Is it still a popular choice?

Bump.

10 Char

Someone? Why are you applying to cas basically?

it depends on the program.

math is 1st in the nation, and economics is 10th in the world.
they have a fabulous politics department as well.

i don’t know too much about anything else because that’s what I’m interested in.

NYU’s math department might be good–but I can tell you it is CERTAINLY not the #1 school in the nation. Caltech, Harvey Mudd, Princeton, and Berkeley I know have higher rankings in mathematics then NYU.

CAS is popular because if you’re undecided and you want to go to NYU–thats the school you apply to. That’s probably honestly why they get the majority of their popularity. Besides that–it’s just because the most common areas of study are found in CAS, and of course because CAS is a great school.

Yeah its definitely not #1 in math haha.

But what i don’t understand is that why don’t students consider their state/ cheaper schools near them for arts and sciences. I mean NYU is so expensive and like its certainly no MIT (in respect to its engineering ) in the field of Arts and Sciences but why are people so eager to go there?

is it a FAD more than anything?

I’m sorry for being ignorant but i am just ever so curious.

hahaha, wikipedia says it’s number one…
networking opportunities.
great location.
etc.

if you dont want to go there, that’s fine, but there are def reasons people do.

There are certain things about certain schools that attract different kinds of people–I mean theres a reason why people choose to go to Reed instead of Penn, or vice versa, for example. NYU’s HUGE attraction is that its a very good school in New York City–literally located on city “soil”. It’s also more “in reach” than Columbia is. NYU has fantastic academics–not top of the line per say, but very, very respectable–and it’s located in one of the busiest and alive cities in today’s world, which makes it incredibly attractive to prospective students.

Yeah–like Hannahtastic said, NYU also is famous for its ability to get you into a job right out of college, and other great networking opportunities. NYU also has fantastic resources which also attracts applicants.

I’m applying to Tisch so no question there, but there are reasons I can imagine for applying to NYU to go to CAS. The course options are massive, for one. I’m thinking about double-majoring and when I compare CAS course offerings to that of other (private) schools, or to liberal arts colleges… wahey. Of course my research has been limited to schools with strong film programs, so don’t take my word for it. It might be worth doing your own research on this matter.

NYU Philosophy is really solid. I don’t know if they rank Philo and where NYU stands in the rankings, but if you look at the requirements to major in philo, that is a real philosophy course (compare the graduation requirements for Philo with, say, UNC-CH philosophy). You can’t fluff through it. Another thing is, if you’re majoring in any language at NYU, or in something international, or well anything really - the study abroad options are very good, as well.

This is just talking about the school itself. Then there’s the location, job placement and internships, etc. I think for CAS that may be a little less pertinent than for Tisch, Stern and Steinhardt students, though.
