NYU Culture, Atmosphere, and Finance

Are there any NYU students who could tell me more about the campus life and classes? I’ve heard a lot of rumors about people feeling very isolated, and I’ve heard a lot about suicides?

How are the classes structured? Is it a healthy learning environment? Are there many opportunities for internships there? And how is the study abroad program? What is the overall feel, and what are the people like? What are the advantages of studying there? And do you recommend going there if you’re tight on money, because I heard that NYU is stingy when it comes to financial aid.

How are the professors? Is living in New York distracting? And most importantly how are the libraries and other resources?

Use the search function for this forum. All of these questions have been answers many, many, many times over.

Students here aren’t more depressed than students at other colleges, we’re just a high profile college, so when students commit suicide, it’s highly publicized.

Well, the suicide in Bobst a few weeks back was highly publicized because it was so public and there were witnesses. But most suicides on campus aren’t so public, so they don’t get much attention…and NYU is a large university so naturally there’s going to be a couple of student deaths per year. Late teens/early twenties is also the age when mental illnesses become more frequent. But it’s not like the atmosphere at NYU alone is going to make you more depressed, it’s a combination of factors.

you asked a lot of questions so I’m not going to answer them one by one (sorry lol) but basically, NYU is pretty different from the typical Undergrad experience: no insulated campus, no quads or football team, and after freshmen year, the dorms aren’t always so close to classes.

Living in NYC can be distracting, but it also comes with lots of opportunities and fun stuff to do. I can’t complain about the resources (although the main library was very poorly designed, and a complete waste of space). Class size and culture varies a lot depending on your major. NYU is really huge and diverse; we have a ton of majors, everything from Renaissance & Medieval Studies to Neural Science to Africana Studies. Gallatin, Tisch, and Stern in particular offer a lot of opportunities you can’t get in other places, although CAS and Steinhardt also have plenty of top programs.

honestly, if you’re tight on money, I wouldn’t come here. If I wasn’t on a (partial)scholarship I wouldn’t pay full tuition, but that’s cause I’m planning on Grad school and wouldn’t want loans. Unless you’re getting a particularly lucrative degree (Stern for Finance) or coming to NYU is going to give you opportunities realllly hard to find elsewhere (lots of Tisch programs) I wouldn’t take on the burden of serious loans for this school.

Just Google “NYU Study Abroad” and the site gives you more information than most posters here could. I’ve never studied abroad so I can’t really say, sorry.
