<p>Here is the wording of the agreement:

Should a student who applies for financial aid not be offered an award that makes attendance possible, the student may decline the offer of admission and be released from the Early Decision commitment.

<p>This means that if the offer is not enough to support attendance (the family decides), you tell the school thanks but no thanks, and apply elsewhere RD.</p>

Barbara Hall, associate provost at New York University, will also set unhappy students free. “They are, after all, 17 years old,” she says. “This is not a legal agreement they have signed. If a student says to us, ‘This is really where I thought I wanted to be, but I can’t see myself there now,’ we release the student. It doesn’t make sense to have students who don’t want to be here.”
