I’m thinking of transferring to NYU Engineering. Is it good or bad?
Also is it true that the acceptance rate is 75%?
That’s too easy to be true…?

NYU Engineering is just a rebranding of Polytechnic Institute. It has always been a rather ordinary accredited engineering school, mostly for local students. NYU figured they needed an engineering school, so they bought Poly and slapped the NYU name on it. In case you didn’t know, it’s located in Brooklyn, apart from the main NYU campus.
So is it of bad quality? Is the acceptance rates really that high? 75?
NYU is ranked #47 in the U.S. News Best Engineering Schools (Graduate) ranking, so why do you think it’s bad quality? The NYU brand goes far especially on the east coast.
It’s not bad, it’s just nothing special.
They accept so many because they’re happy to take almost anyone willing to pay 65k for the same engineering degree they can get for half the price elsewhere.
The NYU brand doesn’t carry any weight in the engineering world.
It’s good …
The acceptance rate may be 75% but the level of applicants is superb – on par with the rest of NYU. The problem is that not many apply to it solely based on the fact that its acceptance rate is so high, which many believe to correlate with a poor program, which simply isn’t the case. Just a little digging on the NYU website shows that it is rated #3 for best value engineering program in the country, despite NYU’s being one of the most expensive universities in the US.
I’m an alumnus of the Polytechnic Institute (back when it was called that). The education I received was adequate, and the degree is ABET accredited. It’s not about the school, but what you do in your career that matters. If you look at sites that track potential earnings over a career like payscale.com, Polytechnic was one of the highest ranked engineering schools for the median salary of its graduates. I believe it actually ranked higher than MIT. A lot of it is that most of its graduate work in the NYC area, so the salaries are higher. I believe the school has improved since I attended in the late 70s, early 80s. Facilities are much nicer, but it no longer is affordable to many people.
Can u afford it? In terms of ranking vs. cost and job recruitment, NYU for engineering seems to be a lousy value proposition. Job recruiters favor hiring engineers from big State U. And big State U typically does not involve shouldering student loan debt that you’ll still be paying off when your kids are getting ready to go to college.

Nvm…just found out NYU Engineering acceptance rate is 31% from some officials… That’s on par with the rest of NYU. And yes I’m looking for scholarships but I’m willing to spend $80 for a shot!
Since you need financial aid, then wouldn’t logic dictate you pursue schools that give decent FA? NYU is notorious for not giving generous money, because NYU can always rely on rabid prestige-ho’s to bankrupt their future with 6-figure student loans.
Yeahh…You’re right…what other prestigious private schools would you suggest I transfer to? Please feel free to look at my chances thread to see my profile!
