NYU (ETW) vs BU BFA Acting

itsthejourney…I picked up on that your son also likes to COMPOSE. While he likely can do that at either school, BU is primarily an acting program and Tisch has acting and MT. In fact, in ETW, I recall a songwriting or music composition class my daughter took. Also ETW’s Independent Projects allow them to write plays OR musicals. One of my D’s ETW professors is a singer/songwriter and once my D was out of college, this professor invited her to perform with her in Europe, which was cool. Also, I recall Moises Kaufman, an alum, came to ETW to lead a workshop production my D was in, and this included original music. Keep in mind that Tisch has the Graduate Program for MT Writing, and while our kids would not be in that as undergrads, my D got to know many of those people and was in some of the workshops of their shows. Many of my daughter’s peers from Tisch, including many who trained in ETW, are singer/songwriters and so many do compose original work, including my own daughter. While she trained in singing/acting/dancing in CAP21 studio, she felt that ETW would allow her a chance to concentrate on acting, but also the creating of new work, which is not as prevalent in a MT program. So, if you son is into writing and composing, on top of acting, ETW really allows for a lot of flexibility to do it all. I think BU might allow for that too, though I am just saying that BU is not as geared toward MT works and more toward drama, and Tisch has both drama and MT and so composing is pretty prevalent there. A lot of my D’s alum peers are composing now in the professional world in addition to acting. So, that is the kind of student you might find in this program. It is not unique to Tisch or ETW, but not all BFA programs have a lot of original works being created and not all acting programs have composing/songwriting infused into the program. ETW does.
