NYU Fall 2017 Transfers Official Thread

Can anyone on this thread give me some advice? I’m still so shocked that I’ve been rejected when there’s not a single B on my entire degree. I called and asked if I could speak with someone about why I was rejected, but they gave me the whole “very competitive we don’t have your app anymore blah blah” speech and I’m just…I got into several places more selective than NYU, a rejection from them was the last thing I expected :((

@Jmercy199 I hope so! All of my other SIR deadlines are on June 1! And I’ve been accepted to all but UCLA, and now that I have my decisions I’m more sure than ever that I won’t be happy anywhere but Tisch

What school are you applying for?

@eatmypaopu I’m not sure how appeals work at NYU but you can ask to appeal your decision
Ultimately it’s not just about grades and scores. It’s about you and your story and your struggle and your triumphs, and if that narrative fits into NYU student culture; ie what could you bring that no one else could.
I’m sure your application is incredible especially if you’ve gotten in everywhere else. Admissions officers have the shittiest job in the world, they break students hearts , and sometimes yes, they make mistakes.

@laurbear95 thanks for your reply! I agree it’s not just about the grades, which makes me even MORE confused because with my cultural background/personal story I felt I was a perfect match for NYU. I’m not sure if I want to even bother applying again next year/applying for summer sessions, because now I’m just extremely depressed. Sorry for bringing my depression to this thread as well :frowning:

@eatmypaopu If it’s your dream school, reapply. And then apply for grad school. If I get rejected from Tisch I’m definitely reapplying for the MFA theater program.
I know if the day comes in the next few weeks and I get rejected, I’ll be in the same boat, depressed as all hell.

But…Don’t give up! Struggle is just plot progression!

@eatmypaopu was NYU your first choice?

@laurbear95 thank you, I guess I shouldn’t give up without trying again sometime in the future, and I’m all about plot progression. @jasonyty12 yes it was, NYU was the least “prestigious” of the places I applied, but it was #1 for me because I truly felt I belonged there. So you can imagine my shock when it was the only one I didn’t get into…

@eatmypaopu Unfortunately, you need to move on from this setback. It’s disappointing to face rejection, but you’ve stated that you were accepted to great schools. I’m sorry that NYU didn’t work out for you, but that’s just the way it does sometimes.
If you want the brutally honest truth, I can give it to you. Just remember that you asked for it.
First of all, your writing skills are atrocious. You have an associates degree, so you’ve taken all of your basics without learning to write well. All of your posts are filled with grammatical errors and punctuation errors. This leads me to believe that your 4.0 was not earned through rigorous coursework. If you were a Freshman, there would be time left to learn through your first-year English classes, but as a Junior, you’ve already taken these classes without gaining the skills you need to succeed at NYU.
Next, the EC’s that you listed have nothing to do with your chosen major You shouldn’t add anything to your application unless it makes sense.
Finally, you mentioned listing excuses for having issues in high school. Excuses don’t help you unless you clearly articulated what you’ve learned since that experience.
Please keep in mind that these are merely my opinions. I’m sorry you weren’t accepted to NYU, but UVA is an amazing school. I wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors.

Is there anyone on here who comes from a low-income family who has seen their financial aid award and doesn’t mind sharing how much they received? I haven’t heard anything about my acceptance yet but I am just curious as to how much financial aid they give to those who are in the same financial boat as me. I currently get the highest amount of financial aid possible at a CC based on my family size (7) and parent’s minimal income due to unemployment.

@laurbear95 I applied to Steinhardt. I also need to get back to Fordham Lincoln Center on July 1st so hopefully I get back by then. If I don’t hear back by the 24 I’ll be accepting my offer there

@crc213 thanks for your reply! It’s okay I don’t mind. I’m willing to take any kind of constructive criticism that I can get since NYU has nothing to say to me in return. With all due respect, this IS an online forum, so if my writing looks atrocious/there are grammatical errors here I kinda don’t care lol. I’d like to think that my writing is pretty decent considering I got a 5 on my English IB exam. I definitely agree with you about the ECs! I was hesitant in including other things because I didn’t want them to feel I was throwing the whole kitchen sink into my application, but adding more pertinent activities definitely would’ve helped. I thought it might show that I have interest outside my major, but it probably worked against me. When I cited the health issues that I had in high school I made sure it wasn’t a sob story. Just the truth and how I’ve become a better student because of it. Once again thanks for your honest opinion.

NYU’s financial aid is pretty bad compared to other peer colleges. The most someone I know got( they had a efc of 0) as a transfer was half off. So they only took 10-20k per year in loans. In my case, I currently receive free tuition and around 10k back from my college to help support my living expenses. I gotta admit that if I were to be accepted the aid has to be around my friend’s to even consider attending. Even at that point it is hard to let go of the extra money every year to spend on leisure. It’s kind of sad that my dream school has to be this expensive :frowning:

@jcr556 forgot to tag lol

@jasonyty12 Do you know the general stats of that transfer student (GPA)? Also did they receive the FA change?

@A_Spectator around a 3.7. I never asked them about the glitch and stuff, since it would be kind of silly to speculate with friends and get rejected. It would be really awkward.

Guys, I heard that taking loans from the bank is a lot cheaper than using the ones that NYU offers. Does any one know if that’s true?

@lillyJ678564 i mean you’re going to be taking the same amount out regardless! the thing to look at is the interest rate. i believe the FA package NYU shows is the amount that you’re eligible for based on your fafsa

Nobody is entitled to an acceptance. If you didn’t get in, apply next year. Some get rejected by their safe school and get accepeted to Harvard. The admissions process is random, so you cannot really expect anything.

Yeah…apparently the interest rate is a lot cheaper elsewhere. Do you by any chance know the interest? Is it “fees” when you click on “cost of attendance”? I really did not know much about loans prior to now.

I just want to take out a loan that’s enough to cover onl tuition. Everything else my parents and I will pay for as we go – like books, transportation, food and such. I live in NY, and NYU is only 8-9 stops away by train from where we live so I’m housing off-campus. Do you know if I can adjust the price of the loans they offer to cater to that? @annadragon

I hope I get into Stern. I applied to Wharton and got rejected. I’m still waiting on Boston College. Whenever I try to access OrgSync, it tells me that I am not authorized. Does anyone know when Stern decisions are typically released? Also, I never applied for housing, so would something appear if I was accepted anyway?
