Hello, im an int’l student and was really excited when i got accepted to nyu!
but after reading some threads and finding some sources, found out tht some ppl think
nyu as an overrated school and i was pretty confused with.
since i got rejected and waitlisted for my top choices, my choices left are u of michigan, nyu, and uiuc.

I’m a science students(chem), who loves art and music, did a lot of EC’s on choir and musicals.
I thought nyu to be the best school tht could fit for me among three schools i mentioned.
but some ppl told me to go to uofm or uiuc instead of nyu, since nyu isn’t a good school for science. i know tht us rankings and other sources tell tht uiuc and u of m has higher ranked chemistry department, but are the rankings and department programs important than having a life in one of the best city in the world? I just want to know, do chemistry rankings and programs really matter for undergradute students?

I mean as an undergraduate science(chem, bio, neroscience, biochem, etc) student, should i go to UofM or UIUC, instead of NYU?

I honestly heard that NYU was great in the sciences and you are definitely going to be with some great faculty within the field. What should drive you to NYU, however, is the fact that a lot of your other interests are awesome at the school and the city. Art and music is obviously a major part of life in NYC and the school has many discounts and promotions to get you to the best performances. Seriously though, you will be challenged in the sciences even if their ranking is lower. The whole experience, in my opinion, would be more pleasant in NYU because of your interests.

I’m a chemistry and neural science major at NYU and involved in a science scholarship program - NYU actually has an amazing Chem program! [Read about it here](NYU)

I came into NYU planning to study Bio and switched to Chem right away. The Gen Chem professor is great, the class is huge but there are smaller recitation/clinic sections. Organic Chem is notoriously difficult but many science majors at NYU enjoy Orgo, whereas people in other colleges often hate it. Yeah, it’s difficult, but the professor makes it interesting and the labs are more fun than gen chem. After gen chem and orgo, the Chem courses become significantly smaller as it’s mostly only Chem and Biochem majors from there on in.

Chemistry is a really difficult major compared to most at NYU, so a lot of people switch out of it. Same with Neural Sci - freshmen year, I met so many people who said they were going to study Chem, Biochem, Neuro, etc, but on average 18-20 students graduate with a BS in Neuro each year, which is really small compared to popular majors like Econ which graduate hundreds. Smaller major means smaller classes and more opportunities for Undergrad research than if you were majoring in Psych for example.

People often associate NYU with the arts, but it has a #1 math program and strong programs in Chem, Econ, and quantitative subjects. U Michigan is also a really good college, and will give you a traditional college experience with sports, school spirit, pretty campus, etc. NYU is a completely different vibe.

I don’t even know what IUIC or whatever is, sorry
I would go with UMichigan or NYU.

thank you sunday1x and Alix2012. I think i’ll go to nyu fo sho
its great to hear that nyu has not only great chem program but also small chem classes in a such large private school!
hope i can enjoy the life in NYC and the life in NYU as a student

btw UIUC - i meant it for u of illinois at urbana champaign, they have really good reputation in chem depart
