NYU - Freshmen tips on dorm (Lipton Hall), food, where to save on text books ... etc

My son just received an email he will be living at Lipton Hall in his freshmen year. Can anyone share their experience on what need to bring in at this dorm? As far as text books go, does anyone know where can we save on buying used text books … etc. Appreciate any comment you may have. He is going to Stern. Thanks

Hey @bigdad930 - I can’t be of any help on Lipton but the best source for most textbooks is to rent them on Amazon. Packages get to NYC overnight and the dorm mail system is super efficient - they send an email as soon as a package arrives. Your son will learn to live with the NYU google mail and calendar anyway since all announcement and class info comes through there. There are also pickup spots (Amazon lockers) close to campus. Used textbooks can probably be bought through student sale (have him check his email for notices for that kind of stuff) but sometimes there’s a version issue with used textbooks so my kids generally rented instead.

Food is good at NYU - lots of variety - but my D (Tisch) was too busy to use all her meal swipes - she figured out pretty fast which dining halls you could grab food for the dorm room from. Dining dollars came in handy, for Sophomore year she’s getting a smaller meal plan and we’ll add dining dollars.

@CaMom13 thank you so much …

Hi!! I’m a rising senior (how did that happen???) and my #1 BIGGEST textbook for Freshman is to NOT BUY TEXTBOOKS BEFORE CLASS STARTS, unless the professor specifies that they need the book on the first day of class. Every professor I’ve ever had has spent time during the first class to review the syllabus INCLUDING textbooks. Many times a professor will post the chapters from the book you need online, which isn’t noted in the syllabus. Other times it will become apparent that you don’t actually need the textbook, it’s just recommended. I wasted a lot of money on textbooks I didn’t end up needing my Freshman year. I’m not in Stern, but many of my Stern friends say the same thing.

Also Lipton is a great dorm  I can’t give specific tips on what to bring besides general dorm packing lists, but the rooms are nice and there’s a lot of study/hangout spaces in the building and a whole lounge in the basement. The Lipton dining hall is also one of my favorites and is commonly considered the best buffet-style dining hall!

@wonderlanddd thank you so much for your advise on text book. Time flies I will send him to Lipton next week.

He just moved in to Lipton hall last week. It is a beautiful dorm modern very close by to main campus building. He says the downstairs cafeteria serves great food all you can eat style with one strip.

That’s great @bigdad930 - I hope he has a wonderful year. I have been super impressed with the dorms at NYU - they are spacious, comfortable, safe and the dorm locations are superb. I told my D she’d never live so well in NYC again!
