NYU Gallatin vs. UCLA

I am in a MAJOR tossup. I recently transferred to UCLA as a sociology major (which was not my ideal major, but was rather communications)… I am unhappy with my major since I want to be communications, but I am pretty sure I will not be able to get into it. I was also admitted to NYU’s Gallatin last week and was thinking of transferring. I want to make sure I make the right decision and do not regret it.

Which has more prestige UCLA or NYU? Is Gallatin hard to get into? If I went to Gallatin I would be able to study my major I want, but I am from California and feel inclined to stay in LA.
Also… what I really want to do in life, doesn’t require a degree, so it’s not the end of the world.

All in all, which is better NYU Gallatin or UCLA sociology?
HELP me asap!! Need to decide by this week! :(

Unless your family can afford to pay full freight at NYU (about $55k), do not even bother trying to transfer. NYU is horribly stingy with financial aid.

BTW…I think UCLA is more prestigious, and it’s ranked higher. :)

Also… what I really want to do in life, doesn’t require a degree, so it’s not the end of the world.

So, if that’s really true, and you think you could make “a go of it,” then major in whatever you like at UCLA, grab your degree, and start your career. :)

Prestige in this case depends on location: NYU is more prestigious on the East Coast, while UCLA is held in higher esteem on the West Coast.

Gallatin is very random with admissions. Relatively speaking, it’s quite hard to get into, but it’s unpredictable. It’s not much easier than UCLA. But you’re already in right? So I don’t see why this matters…

Since you said sociology’s not really what you wanted to do anyways, I’d recommend Gallatin, where you can major in pretty much anything you want. This is all assuming you can pay for it…

Hmmm…I think that UCLA is more prestigious than NYU on the east coast, too. Except for the Tisch School, and that only among those in the know. Are you forced to stay with a declared major at UCLA?

If you cannot get into communications, can you at least get into something else you prefer over sociology? Assuming you can, UCLA is probably the better bet…
