NYU math major or worse college than NYU with Statistics major?

I want to major in stats, and I was shooting for nyu, but since stats is in stern, I sort of became scared of being rejected and wasting my ED. I believe, according to the average acceptance gpa and SAT scores of the students who were accepted for ED, that I will probably be able to get in for ED for just nyu, but im not so sure about stern.
I talked to several people who studied stats in grad school, but didnt major stats in undergrad. They all told me that I don’t have to major stats in undergrad, for instance, I knew someone who majored economics in undergrad, took the required classes for majoring stats in grad school, and did fine.
Also, not many colleges have strong stats programs anyway… so

Should I just go to just nyu, major math, and take the required courses, or go to a worse school and major stats or major math w. minor stats?
I believe I cannot major math and minor stats in nyu because stats is in stern, but I’m not too sure. The math department page did say that students can specialize in a related field, but I’m not sure if stats is one of them…

So if u were me, would you use ur ED on nyu and take required math courses, or go to a worse college with statistics major?
If anyone majored stats here, could you please tell me if you think there would be much of a difference in majoring stats and majoring math (and taking stats related math courses)?

Why would you consider other colleges to be “worse” than NYU?

What do you like so much about NYU? What are your grades and ECs? Let’s find you some alternatives to consider that may be just as good, or even better.

Why do you want to go to NYU? They have a strong math department, but so do many other schools. Their stats faculty is not that well-known anyway…

If you’re expecting to go to grad school for stats, it’s definitely not important to major in stats for undergrad - a math major would seem to have broader opportunities and applications. But, more importantly, can you and your family afford NYU? If you’re counting on financial aid, please don’t fall in love with any single school, but especially not NYU!

Yes, it would be fine if you go to NYU for mathematics, then go to grad school for statistics. NYU has a good math department.

I’d actually recommend thinking about majoring in a content area in undergrad - something like econ, psychology, poli sci, biology, or another area that relies on statistics. Then pursue statistics at the graduate level if you must. Statistics is not an end; it is a means. Without knowledge of existing literature and of research methodology to complement your statitistics chops, you only know just enough to be dangerous.
