Hello. My dad went to the Polytechnic Institute of NY back in the '80s when it wasn’t part of NYU, but now Poly and NYU have merged to form NYU Poly. My dad gets all of the annoying alumni mail from NYU Poly, and I was wondering that even though my dad did not go the NYU, but went to the original Poly, if I have legacy at NYU since it’a one institution. Please help, and thanks ahead of time.

Yes, you would still have legacy. Polytechnic is in the final steps of merging completely into NYU which is slated to complete 2013-2015. And even then, you would still most likely be considered legacy for Polytechnic, once it is officially a part of NYU, since each school of NYU has their own admissions policies.
