Yeah that’s what I thought before. So I didn’t pay $200 to retake toefl for BU and NYU and submitted my old toefl score which is 81. But I didn’t get into BU, which I thought could get in
@asdddw2 It’s probably not because of your TOEFL scores. It’s just for making sure that you have enough knowledge of English to take courses at an American college.
And yeah, the whole college process is really unpredictable, anything can happen.
I can’t think of anything that caused bad effect on my BU decision other than toefl score. And yea it is so unpredictable, making me so nervous.
@Film2023 @drumminggeek87 i applied/ auditioned for drama in jan…back then March seemed so far away…now it’s in 3 days and I’m so nervous
any other tisch applicant who did not send act/sat? i applied for film and tv production. fingers crossed
@asdddw2 “I can’t think of anything that caused bad effect on my BU decision other than toefl score.”
Admissions are holistic and BU had an 18% admit rate this year. It’s not just based on your stats. People with fantastic (not just “decent”) stats got rejected too. Essays, recommendations, how competitive your major is, what other applications looked like, the fact that internationals have a much smaller part of the admissions pool etc… all play a part.
Edit: that said, the BU page for international applicants says the most competitive international applicants have a minimum score of 90-100 on TOEFL, with minimum of 20 in each section, so yes that may well have played a part in your denial. And I’ve just looked up NYU too, which says competitive applicants will have 100 or above. Sorry…
@mmcowart i sent my act…which wasn’t the best…and I’m worried that it could’ve been the deciding factor …and now i wish i wouldn’t have
@mmcowart D was accepted ED 1 for Tisch. Did not submit SAT. A rep that visited her school said “if they don’t see it, it will not be considered.”
Can anyone 100% confirm that NYU superscores the ACT?
@St678557 , yes NYU itself says so.
“If you’ve taken the ACT more than once, we will recalculate a new composite using the highest of each section, regardless of test date.”

D applied to Tisch for drama and did not submit SAT. Looking forward to closure on this Thurs. She is very happy with her current options so will be fine either way. Good luck to everyone!!
Anybody else here apply to Tandon? Does anybody know how competitive it is?
@bigguy4u I applied to Tandon. Not sure how competitive it is though…engineering schools are typically harder to get into than the others; that’s true for most universities.
The real question is, who here can really afford NYU? My biggest concern even if I get in (which is pretty close to impossible) is whether they will give me any sort of financial aid. Does anyone know anything about that?
Are any merit scholarships awarded on/after the 28th? I’ve always been very confused about NYU’s merit scholarships. In addition, I applied to Tisch Cinema Studies, I’m Hispanic, and I’m disabled. Do any of those open up their own scholarship opportunities, and if so, when and how would I hear about any of these scholarships?
lowkey wished i applied ED much less chances now ugh
@01pabs I know, I hate that they fill over half of their class through ED, but I’m too poor to commit to a school without seeing aid ?. And too indecisive to commit to a school that early lol.
@pengithepanda aid is mostly need based. They caution they are not always able to meet full need.
@drumminggeek87, NYU cautions it has very few merit scholarships. Financial packages are available with offere so afaik if it’s not in there it’s not coming.
@drumminggeek87 also I’m curious as to where you got the stat that they fill half the class with ED? I know that they have been looking to increase the percentage of the class from ED but I hadn’t seen any numbers, that is higher than I would have thought (for a class of around 6000 people that implies 3000/14000 in the ED round? Though, that’s still 21% which sounds reasonable for ED. Anyway if you have or heard a NYU source be interested to know that. Thanks!)
@SJ2727 Thanks for the info on merit scholarships!
re: the ED stats, I went to an off campus admissions session in my city this past fall and they emphasized that stat a lot. I believe it was also included in the official school powerpoint they had so I don’t think it was just a mistake made by the presenters. There were also 2 presenters at this, both of whom were higher up in the admissions office (my region did not have a local rep at the time, so they sent these two presenters instead), so I doubt that both of them would have made a mistake on this, but obviously that’s a possibility. And I don’t know if the stat was 50% between ED 1 and ED 2 or just ED 1. I believe they just kept saying “half of our class is filled in the ED/early rounds,” which I assume encompasses both ED 1 and ED 2.
For fall, 2017 only 2,789 students were admitted ED out of 17,707 total students admitted (15%).
https://www.nyu.edu/content/dam/nyu/institutionalResearch/documents/CDS_2017-2018.pdf
Now what is true is that 2800 acceptances in ED will fill almost half of NYU’s 6,000-strong freshman class. So if every ED student honored their ED and could afford their FA from ED, the first bunch would take up a lot of space in the freshman class. But there are still going to be many more acceptances RD than ED because statistically the yield will be lower.
For that CDS, which is the most recent published. 36% of the ED applicants were admitted and 27% of RD. NYU’s numbers fell dramatically last year so for sure the second number went down.
