***NYU Regular Decision Class of 2021 Discussion***

@CYN112 Many schools do that. For example, Emory superscores SAT but not the ACT. I think it has to do with your major. If you major in a STEM field, they want to see a good math and science score, but overall, they would like to see a good composite score.

@camwow your admissions to one school have nothing to do with your admissions to another school, so just because you have been rejected from those schools does not mean you will be rejected from others. All schools have different processes for reviewing applications, and they all weigh things differently. If there is something in your application that is weak (such as your GPA or test scores) and that is the reason you keep being rejected, that issue may present itself at all schools. In general though, admissions decisions are all separate from each other.

@camwow I’ve been rejected from BC, BU, Northeastern, Northwestern, Pomona, and waitlisted at WashU. I guess we will both be getting rejected. haha

Also, if I get in would I be able to switch my major to engineering or is that like unheard of?

@ktf1117 Yes you could switch your major, however you would likely have to wait a semester or possibly a year. You can do internal transfers between schools at NYU, but typically you will have to spend at least some time in the school/program/major you applied to. You will definitely be able to talk to your academic advisor about your situation if you are accepted though and he/she would be able to give you more specific guidance on your particular situation.

@Rav115 only my safety ):

@camwow Ok realistically I would say that NYU is looking to be a bit of a reach school based on your past. However, that does not mean you should give up on NYU, because your admission at one school only sort of correlates with admission at another school. I have a friend who got accepted into Harvard…but got rejected from NYU (wth??) and others that made schools far out of their reach. One person in my grade has an UW GPA of 3.2 and he made it into Stern. So don’t give up hope!

thank you @rav115! still waiting on Hamilton, Colgate, and NYU

also, this girl who lives in the same county as me is also applying to NYU and has the same ECs as me (skating/coaching), but with even more ECs like several in school clubs (just a member, not an officer) and has a better GPA and SAT score. does this mean that she will bump me out of the competition or is it likely that we will both be admitted?

@camwow pretty sure they just compare you with people at your school, not with people that go to different schools in the same county. Not 100% sure about that though

@camwow the AdCom is going to compare you to other people from your school not by looking at your applications side-by-side but by looking at your application next to your school profile that your counselor should have submitted.

@camwow Yeah they definitely don’t compare you with people outside of your school. I am sorta doubtful that they even compare people, or at least very much, within the same school. I believe they look at your credentials and look at your school’s profile. If you pass their standards you are admitted.
According to Naviance, last year 114 people in my school applied to NYU, and 36 got accepted. That is a freaking lot of students from one high school, so I don’t believe that they would actually limit the amount of students who get in from each school, much less a county.

So i have this ec that i didnt put on my common app…
a financial management company i started a year ago. I didnt put it on my app cuz i already filled up my ec slots and it seemed to be going nowhere. Today, i got funding for it from some vc’s and i was wondering if there was a way to inform NYU about these new developments.

Chance me!!!

@applefreak665 If it had happened earlier it definitely would have been worth emailing NYU about as they do like you to send them updates if their are changes or improvements in your application. However, at this point all admissions decisions have already been made. I don’t think it would hurt you to email them, but I also doubt it would help you.

@ravenclaw316 you’re a pretty average applicant in almost every respect from what you’ve stated. You might be accepted, rejected, or waitlisted. It’s honestly so random for applicants like you who are impressive but not exceptional. Try not to worry about it too much, you’ll know your admission decision in about 10 days.

I’m really hoping for a good decision from NYU since I just got a waitlist and a rejection in a row :frowning:
