@thawowtso - I sent you an email via CC - I was wondering if I could talk to you about Shanghai - the admissions process and just…how it is over there.

Also, I guess I’m just in the nervous stage right now. So I received an email from the head of the global admissions office in London. The woman said that she was “very impressed” with what she had read of my application so far, and was going to reach out to me “later this week” to schedule an interview. It was sort of strange - she had not seen my writing supplement (Common App errors) or my school report when she decided she wanted to interview me. I was naturally incredibly, incredibly ecstatic.
I have not heard from her again. I mean, I know it’s only Thursday, but I guess I’m just being impatient because I am so excited and anxious at the same time! A few things:

So…should I be worried that she hasn’t contacted me yet?

Interviews - how do they go? How long do they last? I have very very clear reasons why I want to go to NYU Shanghai so that won’t be a problem, but I guess…I’m bad at interviews and those questions like “What will yo ucontribued to the community” or stuff like that. And I read that you were asked about a time you went outside your comfort zone. I know we don’t have the same lives, but how did you respond?

Uhhh I don’t know. Any tips? Oh yeah, I wanted to ask…I don’t know if you’d know this, but what does an interview mean? Does it mean that they are seriously considering me? Do they just interview like almost all competent applicants who seem to show interest, or is it like a real…like thing? Where do you think I am, in there eyes, if they are considering an interview?

Ah, one more thing - do you think it will help that I am applying early decision 1?

Greetings from NYU Shanghai!

I am writing to you on behalf of the Admissions Office at NYU Shanghai. We have reviewed your application for Early Decision I, and would like you to participate in a virtual interview with us.

To schedule your 30 minute interview, please go to the following link and select a time:

Please remember to include your Name/Skype ID when you sign up for a time slot. If you have any questions, please let me know.

Best,
Shalon Kegg

Honestly, like I said in an earlier thread, I can probably do well in an interview (as I had to do one for private school). My question is if this program is actually selective. I’m kind of worried that my first campus choice in New York didn’t consider me, and just put me in Shanghai…I don’t think I’m a horrible candidate for NYU…

No really, don’t worry - they are handled as separate entities. However, if you prefer NYU New York, I’d just hold off on the interview.

@Marinozai

I don’t remember receiving an email! But if you want to resend it to me over PM then I can give you a longer response
But in short, different people handle the interviews for different locations- so while some people may have gotten an interview already, your interviewer might be going slower. In my case, I applied ED1, and I didn’t get an interview request until December, it just depends :)

@SangyRocky

This should clear up any confusion: You are evaluated for NYU New York and NYU Shanghai separately. That means that two different sets of people read your application having absolutely no knowledge about how the other school has decided. So Person #1 reads your application and judges you for NYU New York and Person #2 reads the application and judges you for NYU Shanghai. They then BOTH make a decision of whether or not to accept you having NO knowledge of what the other school has said. Therefore, if you get into whatever school you listed as your first choice on your application, you will receive an acceptance for that school come December. If you do not get into your first choice school then you will receive notice for the second choice school. In your case, you will only receive an admission decision from NYU Shanghai if you were already rejected from NYU New York.

I cannot stress enough how applying to NYU Shanghai (or Abu Dhabi or New York) can NEVER affect your application to another campus. Therefore, DO NOT hold off on the interview (I don’t believe you can do that anyways). Hope that helped!!! :)

I just PMed you - I guess I’m just wondering if you could describe how it is in Shanghai. To what extent is it like a “normal” college experience? I know that it is wildly different - something I appreciate - but what things are the same?
How does being in Shanghai contribute to what you are studying? What about your classmates, in other majors?

I am pretty nervous about this interview. Any ideas on what she may ask?

From what I have read, it just depends on who is interviewing you. Who is interviewing you?

sigh I think I will see for myself. Did you get your email yet?

Not yet, which is weird. I mean the person said they would email me.

And yeah, sadly I think it’s hard to tell. I have read that a few questions are obviously, “Why do you want to go to NYU Shanghai?” and “Example of a time you went outside of your comfort zone.” One person was asked how they would contribute to the community, another was asked what animal they wanted to be…standard awkward interview questions.

When is your interview? Tell us how it goes :)

It’s next week. I am kinda nervous though since if NYUSH gives me a bigger scholarship I would much rather go there.

Well, it is definitely a big consideration. I’d definitely make sure it’s something you want to do though, because moving for four years a big thing.

Who is interviewing you?

After putting into consideration how much I would have to pay, I feel I fell in love with NYUSH xD

I will have Shalon interviewing me.

Haha yeah. Last year, Shanghai’s financial aid was pretty great. That being said, that was its inaugural year. It’s hard to say what it’ll be this year.

I would definitely also think about just like, if you’d be happy living there for four years, too.
And good luck - tell us how it goes!

I finally got my interview request on Monday! If anyone interviews/has interviewed, please post how it went/what kinds of questions were asked.

hey there
interview is for real more like a casual conversation. they asked “why do you wanna study in Shanghai?” type of questions. Also, what kind of legacy would you like to start? How would your friends describe you? What challenges do you expect? These are the questions I remember.
My interview was one of the first and I was sooooo nervous. I really want to get in, so fingers crossed!

I had mine - it went really well, I think. Extremely well. But I don’t know how much the interview matters in the decision. Fingers crossed, I guess.

And yeah, it was just normal interview questions, which would normally make me nervous. But for some reason it was just really natural and casual. I think that if you truly, genuinely want to go and you know why, you won’t have any trouble.

Yay! Then I hope that we all get accepted so maybe we can meet up!

Yeah, me too! Now I guess it’s just a waiting game…intense finger crossing. How did your interview go?

Congrats! I live just near Shanghai and it is a very nice place to study and to live! Wish you guys a great four year there.

Thanks - well first we need to get in, which is…not exactly guaranteed.
