I’d love to hear from anyone who was accepted to Stern as an undergrad and what your high school GPA was. The NYU Stern web page says this about admissions:
Mean HS GPA & SAT 3.9/4.0 & 1432/1600
Median HS GPA & SAT 3.76/4.0 & 1460/1600
I’m a parent, not a student, so can anyone explain how the median is so much lower than the mean?
Thanks!
Mean vs Median – this indicates that there’s a largish spread of GPAs on the lower end whereas the spread of kids with above avg GPAs is tight – not surprising since i’ts so high.
These almost have to be weighted GPAs, which would use values greater than 4.0. Under this scenario, the median(where 50% of students are greater than or equal to that score and 50% of students are less than or equal to that score) can be lower than the mean or average. If the cap is 4.0, than those values are impossible.
How are those values impossible if the cap is 4.0?
They claim the mean is 3.9 and the median is 3.76. Consider the median: they are saying half of the students had a GPA below 3.76. If so, it seems impossible to get a mean of 3.9 if half the GPAs are below 3.76 and half are no more than 4.0.
Oh ok I see. Perhaps they are talking about Weighted gpa for mean?
It’s UW because they specifically say 3.76/4.0 and 3.9/4.0.
