In addition to any work experience that you listed on your application, please tell us how you spent your most recent summer vacation.

Last summer vacation was one of the most unforgettable summer vacation in my life. After intern at Deheng Auction company being as an assistant for auctioneer, I traveled to Hong Kong and Japan for two weeks in order to both experience the authentic local culture and to practice my Cantonese and Japanese. My days were filled with interacting with the heart and soul of Kowloon, the prosperity of Tokyo and the Japan traditional architecture in Kyoto. After some time speeding with locals in Hong Kong and Tokyo, I began to realize the great cultural gap between China and Japan, and also the cultural nuance between China Mainland and Hong Kong. I used to being taught that the East Asian countries are likely the same in their cultures, however after this tour, I started to be inclined to believe that every single culture has their own characteristics, and should not be extinguished with the same. Another thing that I got from this tour is the increase of the skill of language, after being ‘compeled’ to speak Cantonese and Japanese in Hong Kong and Japan, I had really gerat progress in my Cantonese and Japanese speaking skills.

If you had the opportunity to spend one day in New York City with a famous New Yorker, who would it be and what would you do? (Your New Yorker can be anyone -past or present, fictional or nonfictional - who is commonly associated with New York City; they do not necessarily have to have been born and raised in New York.)

Being impressed by his moral integrity of rejecting donation from the Saudi Arabic Prince, Rudy Giuliani, the former mayor of the New York City would be the New Yorker I want to meet with. We would first visit Yankee stadium to watch a race with the New York Mets at home facing the Atlanta Braves. Then we would visit Ground Zero in Lower Manhattan, I would ask him how he acted as a leader so successfully at a critical point, and set up an example for the rest of New York people. After that, we would visit NYU, and he will tell me his experience at NYU, and give me some advice about living and learning in NYU.

Write a haiku, limerick, or short (eight lines or less) poem that best represents you.

A boy seeking to get over the wall,
All he wanted is enjoy a greater scope,
When he grown up,
He found out he lives in a world full of walls,
From the walls created by his own knowledge limitations
To the walls that tucked in his country.
Long fed up by the confine of the walls,
He began to expand his scope,
By listening advice of others,
By perceiving information from other cultures,
He tolerate more things he used not,
He developed more objective views,
He began to think in others’ stances,
He ended his era to limit himself,
He started his first step get over the walls.

In the year 2050, a movie is being made of your life. Please tell us the name of your movie and briefly summarize the story line.

In 2020, Yihan started to get back to China to work as a stock analyst in Shanghai. However, working as a stock analyst in New York for 5 years, Yihan had not foreseen the difficulties working in Shanghai market. Contrast with the stock market in New York, the Shanghai market, being relatively-immature in supervision, had been filled with large investor manipulating the stock market. In this case, many large stock markets had established close relationship with large investors too benefit each other. The stock company, however, had provided fake information to their clients in order to the large investors. Although consider this way of profiting ridiculous, Yihan still obeyed the company rule to provide fake stock investigation to the clients both in the company and in the TV stock program. After half years of working, Yihan had received criticism from retail investors for not providing accurate analysis for the stock, he had taken granted for these criticisms. Until one day, he had an old retail investor who lost all their money prepared for the time after they retire. At first, he had thought him as being ‘stupid’ for ‘believing the agents’. However, the old man had, instead of censuring him, had accolade him for providing him analysis for several weeks, and had said he believed it is the unpredictability of the market, instead of the unprofessional of him that caused his great loss. He was ashamed at that time, being a stock analyst, had taken advantage of others’ belief to them to make profits for themselves. He decided to reveal the truth. Does the society approve for his action?

Please tell us what led you to select your anticipated academic program and/or NYU school/college, and what interests you most about your intended discipline.

(Version i)
I choose mathematics as my academic interest, not because it is easy, but because it is hard, because it will serve to better study most knowledge in the world, because that challenge is one that I am willing to accept and one I intend to win.

Many students find it hard to learn mathematics well, while that’s just where beauty of mathematics lies. The sense of achievement I obtain after I tap my mind to the limit to “conquer” it is incomparable. When my classmates still struggle with mathematics problems, I worked it out already. It’s not because I have talent in mathematics, but because I had my magic weapon of summarizing. When I learned function, I compared the expression, parity, monotonicity and symmetry of exponential, logarithmic, power and trigonometric function, found out similarities and connection, and comprehended it easily. In addition, I have special preference for difficult problems. I usually asked myself those questions: which knowledge-points shall I use? Is there any point I missed? Is there a simpler way to work it out?

(Version ii)
One important reason is that mathematics is the foundation of business. Born with a mother, who was the CEO of an auction company, I decided to engage in finance and economics very early. The big books high above on the shelves attracted me as a child. But my mother always smiled and said it was too difficult for me. I read them stealthily when my parents are not around. Indeed they were too profound for my little mind, but mystery formula in the books took root in my heart. I tried to identify formula I had learned in the class, but I always fail. But from that time I realized that to be an expert in business, you should be a good mathematician first.
