NYU Tisch Studio placement — discussion and results

Question for members that already have a S/D attending NYU Tisch. Would like to “talk” about Merit Scholarships offered by NYU. (I can’t figure out how to make a new subject)

My D auditioned for acting this weekend in LA, and if she happens to get accepted, I need to start circling the wagons and figure out how to pay for it !?!??!?!?

Can you give me a general idea of the amount that NYU gives out for Merit Scholarships? Unsure if grades are part of the consideration. For comparison my D has a 4.2 GPA and ACT 29.

Any insight would be appreciated.

@LamaDrama - so overall, in general, as a rule (I’m stalling here)… unlike many smaller schools or state schools NYU is fairly stingy on academic merit scholarships and doesn’t offer practically ANY merit scholarships where there is no financial need … AND your D’s stats aren’t high enough for merit at NYU. Her GPA is stellar but I’m assuming that’s weighted? Her ACT is actually below average for NYU overall. :frowning: So - does that mean you should despair? Not yet! Last year several members here said their kids got generous aid offers from NYU and they did not have any “need” so the assumption was they were for artistic merit. Tisch does not advertise this but it happened so let’s hope it happens for your D. Make sure you’ve submitted all your financial aid info, you must have applied for financial aid to qualify for any scholarships, wait for the package… and maybe pray.

@CaMom13 Thanks for the reply. I had already been forewarned that NYU wasn’t too generous with merit scholarships. I was just “hoping” - LOL.

I consider NYU and UCLA the “Hail Mary” colleges with regards to acceptance based on the thousands of kids applying.

@LamaDrama I want to add that FA, if awarded, may change during the year as well. We have need, and D also has above average stats. At the end of December, without appealing, D was awarded additional FA. No reason given. We also appealed and D was awarded even more money for second semester. FA says it is one-time, but we will continue to appeal FA each semester. Fingers crossed for you.

@yellahamma Great tip about appealing, this would apply to any college attending! Sadly, “we look good on paper” like a lot of families and will not qualify for need.

Thankful that we only have one child to get through college - LOL

Make sure to submit your FA paperwork anyway @LamaDrama - the worst they can say is no!

I will say - my D is very happy at Tisch and we feel fortunate to be able to send her to NYU but several of her classmates underestimated the expense and have left NYU for financial reasons which is really so very SAD. No school, no education, no college or pre-professional experience is worth bankrupting a family or putting a young artist into deep debt - that’s my two cents.

^ Agreed with @CaMom13 - if you have to borrow and have your artist graduate with debt, not worth it, there are other schools. Life will be hard enough after for a while before they make it (or not).

And just to be fair - that’s true for ALL schools, not just NYU  I know people like to pick on NYU for the tuition but many private schools are in the same price range and NYC schools are all particularly expensive. Location, location, location - it’s not just for housing prices anymore, rofl.

Curious, does anyone know when NYU typically starts sending out Acceptances?

Patience is a virtue, NOT - LOL

@LamaDrama According to the “where/when” thread and other sources, they release on the same day as the Ivies, sometime in late March. But that is just me repeating what I’ve read/heard from other people, not NYU itself.

I believe it is going to be on 3/28 for everyone (yes,no)

NYU releases decisions for everyone (all schools) at once and they’ll let you know - usually but not always a couple days in advance - exactly when and where the decisions come out. They will frequently release a day or so before the originally published date but not always. Follow MeetNYU on Twitter or the NYU RD thread on CC and you’ll be kept in the loop. They try hard to be transparent and communicate clearly so that’s one school you don’t have to constantly check the portal for.

My S received an email from NYU telling him to check the portal.
