NYU versus Parsons (school of design)

Hi, a friend’s daughter got admitted into NYU’s Gallatin School of Individualized Study and also Parsons’s dual degree for BA/BFA program.

Now the family is debating which one to go. The girl thought NYU’s program is for students who haven’t made mind for what they will do in the future, so provide more flexibility for the major selection in the future. The girl’s father thought Parsons program is good for art design, down to earth, may be better for finding a job after graduation. This is an international student, they live in other country (not in U.S.).

If anyone has insights to offer, really appreciated.

NYU generally has much better name recognition nationally and internationally. But as for that specific program… I don’t think I’d go to Gallatin for it. Gallatin is more inclined towards academic majors, not arts and hands-on professional training stuff. Tisch, however, has an awesome design department that is more comparable to Parson’s program.

Gallatin is for people who want to have a major (the school calls them “concentrations”) that isn’t necessarily offered elsewhere at NYU (or at any university anywhere, for that matter). It’s not simply for people who don’t know what they want. From what I understand Gallatin students have to declare their concentration as early as (or possibly earlier than) CAS students in “traditional” majors.

I have a good friend that is an admission counselor for a direct competitor of Parsons. That school is a force to be reckoned with for design majors and the job potential is definitely there.
If your friend’s daughter is pretty sure she wants what Parsons offers, then it would be a no-brainer. On the other hand, if she is unsure - go with NYU. Although Gallatin is not meant for this purpose, she can at least explore and design her own degree at NYU or even try to transfer into another school within the University.
