NYU Waitlist Class of 2029

Congrats! Do you think you’ll commit?

is the housing portal still an indicator?

I haven’t made a decision yet, I’m still deciding between the NYU offer and UIUC because Illinois has a really good physics/computer science program, but also NYU also has a respectable computer science program. Also I got admitted to the business school at Illinois while not for NYU. Currently I have an equal interest in both schools.

Both are amazing options. UIUC is a powerhouse in CS, and so is their business school. I also have some personal experience with NYU’s BTM program if you’re interested. Happy to share if it helps.

If you were admitted to business at UIUC, you won’t be studying CS or Physics. What do you want to study?

Honestly, it doesn’t get much better than UIUC when it comes to CS, especially compared to Tandon. And getting into their business school too? That’s huge.

yeahh but im not too surprisedd

Any movement for Gallatin?

Thank you so much! This really helps! Did you get any internships while doing BTM, or know anyone that got internships that was doing BTM? I just want to know where I can go with a BTM degree, I really want to do Investment Banking or later down even get into Hedge Funds, but I heard that BTM is more for consulting though NYU said (in the little video going over BTM) that one of the places people got internships/jobs was JPM. Let me know if you know any information on career options with BTM! This really helps!

I would be studying Finance+Data Science and would look to add a duel degree with either Mathematics or Physics! But of course Gies would be my “home” college and there I would do Finance+Data Science as my “Initial” major!

I know someone who started in BTM but then decided to change into a more CS-focused major because they realized the competition would be tough, especially after finance became such a popular major, and with NY U being so strong in it with Stern compared to Tandon, which is a school of engineering. They felt that they would have a better shot with a more solid STEM background, which would allow them to stand out more, like pure computer engineering, and a specific minor or other major (I don’t recall) tailored to their career goals.

As for advice, I’d say focus on where you see yourself in the future and choose the path that aligns best with that vision. For something like investment banking or hedge funds, a program that’s focused solely in finance might provide a more direct path than a more diverse program.

Yeah I’m thinking about, if I did go to NYU, that I would try to switch to Econ in CAS or add computer science in Tandon and but would also try to transfer into stern. Many quant based funds and investment related groups don’t mind hiring pure CS or mathematics students as teaching the financial system and literacy to a quant is much “easier” than teaching CS or high level mathematics to a purely finance students.

Also given NYU’s reputation and network in New York is the main reason I would want to go compared to UIUC being ~2-3 hour drive to Chicago would make it a lot harder to, and annoying, to commute to UIUC given that I also live near DC. Is it rare for a Tandon student, specifically those doing BTM, or really any major at Tandon to transfer to Stern relative to the overall internal transfer acceptance rate for Stern?also thank you very much for the insight you’ve brought!

parents r supporting. dont fall under nyu promise so didn’t bother applying

Even though I really like Tandon, it’s still a growing school that’s building its reputation in engineering and CS, and the BTM program is relatively new as well.

It doesn’t quite compare to the strength and recognition of UIUC’s programs. If you’re thinking about combining a finance-related field with CS, UIUC might actually be the stronger choice. It’s home to one of the top-ranked business schools and computing programs in the country. On top of that, UIUC has the Investment Banking Academy, which is a major advantage as it directly prepares and places students into top Wall Street investment banking and private equity firms, and that kind of structured pipeline is rare outside of schools like Wharton or Stern.

Transferring into CAS is doable. But transferring into Stern is a whole different story (it’s extremely competitive and close to impossible). It’s not worth choosing NYU based on the hope of transferring, especially to Stern.
