The worst of it is that she is not the oldest woman to give birth to twins. See this:

While Birnbaum is the oldest woman to give birth to twins in the U.S., the oldest woman on record to give birth is Maria del Carmen Bousada Lara, a Spanish woman who gave birth by cesarean section to twin boys on Dec. 29, 2006 — just seven days shy of her 67th birthday.

Birnbaum hopes to inspire other women through her actions.

Prepare to be inspired, CC mamas!

As someone who became pregnant accidentally at 48 and gave birth at almost 49, I will be the first to say that this woman is insane. Pardon me for being judgmental.

I realize that I am going through withdrawals as I send our liitle “girl” off to college…but this is scary!..birth at 49…YIKES!..no dear G…don’t want to go down that road again-enjoyed it the first time-but that was enough!

She’s also got a six year old and two WAAAAAAY older kids that are, I think, 29 and 33!

I emailed my hubster back and said…“So, what are you gonna bribe me with???” And he just answered back, “Well, I guess I should have waited on the new computer…how about a trip to see some of your CC friends???”

I guess he’s smarter than I give him credit for sometimes… ;)

As a late blooming parent (not NEARLY that late) and one who played stork until just recently giving up OB do do just GYN, she has no clue…or lots and lots of help (maid and nanny etc). I did not read the link, but does she have a younger partner who needed/wanted a family? Or is she relaxed because she was a surrogate for her daughter? I have known several older woman who did this for their D’s, actually.

I’m 44 and have a hard time chasing my 2yo. (I suppose these boys will have a nanny?)

What I don’t get is that doctors will use all kinds of technology to make this happen for women in their 50s and 60s, but a women who gets pregnant the natural way in her 40s gets treated like–well, kinda like an ER doc treats the mangled motorcyclist who was riding without a helmet.

atomon–I am hoping you are refering to the attitude of male doc’s? Many of us women OB’s in my area were all late to motherhood and were a bit kinder/gentler to patients who were also.

OMG I just read the article. This woman is a psychologist! She went to Capetown, South Africa for IVF. She did this to have “company” for her 6 yo. And yes she has children in their 30’s and this was not a second marraige. I have to wonder how much hands on she is/will be at 60 with twins.

Interesting, that her own children may very well have children that end up being younger than their nephews… will they still be referred to as “nephews” if they’re younger than their aunts and uncles that may arrive later??? - er…wait, I’m confused, what is the proper term for them?

I’ve heard the chances of that happening naturally are small. As you have demonstrated perfectly, though, small does NOT mean non-existent! I wonder how many CC moms you terrified just now? :D

LTS, The kids of Birnbaums’ older kids (if there are any) are the nieces or nephews, and yes they could theoretically be older than their twin “uncles!”
