OB/GYN resident dies of Covid-19 after being assigned to work in the ER

I think it is very helpful to try and understand why this virus impacts some more than others and it is not disrespectful. It is not judging them but helping those with similar conditions to understand the need to take additional precautions. I wish more data was available. How many folks with zero known comorbidities by age group would be very useful.

American football players tend to have high BMI, but their body fat percentage is probably lower than that of non-athletes with similar BMI, due to being more muscular. However, many of those playing offensive or defensive line still have high body fat percentage, so they may still be (sometimes very) obese by body fat percentage, even though using BMI may significantly overestimate obesity for them.

In terms of younger or lower risk people dying or becoming very sick while older or higher risk people not doing so, perhaps amount of virus in the initial infection matters. Health care workers who work close to the patient’s face may be vulnerable to getting high doses of virus if the patient coughs or sneezes, for example.

I was following on her CaringBridge page and her family said she died of a severe brain bleed a day and a half after successfully coming off ECMO after many attempts to wean her off. It’s such a devastating loss for her family and the patients she helped.

My wife was just commenting this yesterday, so sad.
We felt lucky because they did not ask D, an OB resident, to attend ER duties, even she was in the center of the epidemics few months ago.

Today’s New York Times has a very interesting article about why children almost universally do not get sick from infection with SARS-CoV-2. The new science reporter, Apoorva Mandavilli, is excellent. I look forward to more of her reporting.

How Do Children fight Off the Coronavirus?
The secret may lie in an “innate” immune response that targets unrecognized invaders, scientists say.
