Obama health care rally in Comcast Center on Thursday

The marching band has been asked to play, which is how I found out about it. Participation by band members is voluntary, according to the email she forwarded.

I’m trying to figure out how to get tickets, since band members are only being allocated one extra ticket each and we have three family members who want to go.

Could be a difficult day to get around campus, so people should allow extra time to get to class.

Well, I bet Beh. sci. will give off classes, so the kids probably won’t have to worry about needing extra time.

Also for yourself, I doubt that every band member is from MD, why don’t you ask her to ask some friends?

I heard about it on CNN Saturday morning. Should be an interesting day around campus…unless he’s flying in, the motorcade could really mess up the traffic.

He’ll be driving in, it’s only about 20 miles. Luckily he’ll be going against traffic in the morning since most people are driving into DC

That was exactly what I did first – yet to be seen if that pans out. The band member tickets are supposed to guarantee a seat according to band directors email. Otherwise, all the information I’ve seen says it’s free and open to the public, nothing about tickets.

It’s not that big of a deal, but it would be nice to go. I’ll let my wife use the single ticket if can’t scare up one or two more because she has never attended a Presidential event before and my son would have to miss some of his HS classes to go.

[President Obama To Hold Health Care Rally at Maryland :: University Communications Newsdesk, University of Maryland](http://www.newsdesk.umd.edu/sociss/release.cfm?ArticleID=1962)

I spoke to DS @ 3, and classes are already being cancelled for Beh Sci… None of his roommates intend to go (he is in a 4 bdrm UMD suite with 6 others), add in the swine flu, and I am guessing it will not be as bad as you think.

I need to ask, why do you want to go? Is it because you want to say I saw the President speak live? I do not mean that in a mean way, I am just curious, what is the big deal about seeing him. Please understand my background, we had the chance to see 41 in the UK, 42 in AK, 43 in NC (all of these were on military bases), I just never had the desire to spend 6 hrs in traffic for a 45 minute speech to say I was there. especially since it was covered by the media. It was not something I would place high on my “been there done that list”. I can be completely wrong and I apologize if you take it offensively, I am just curious.

Again, not trying to be defensive, just trying to get it

There are at least two reasons I’d like to attend:

The main reason is to see my DD perform (This is also the main reason why I bought football season tickets and went to the game against JMU Saturday night). Although I’m not really sure what the color guard will be doing while the marching band plays.

The other reason is that fact that I support his proposals for health care reform and don’t mind going through some moderate hassles to show that support.

That said, unless we can scare up another band ticket to supposedly to guarantee a seat, I still may skip it.

Also, I don’t expect 6 hours of traffic.

There don’t seem to be any tickets. My friend in marching band didn’t hear about any. You just line up ridiculously early.

Thanks for answering, and not taking it the wrong way. I should have 6 hrs between driving and the doors opening at 9. I just went up to see DS today. I left the house for a 51 mile trip and it took me 2 1/2 hrs…I HATE 66 and 495! That was after 9 am rush hour traffic, it took me 1 hour to go 7 miles…did I say I HATE 66 and 495? :D:D:D:D

Hope you get to see it, will be thinking about you tomorrow and saying a prayer that there is no traffic.

Northern Virginia has history of over-development and underfunding of roads and it shows in the traffic. It took me 3 hours to get from Tyson’s Corner to Haymarket last Spring when we were headed to a concert at UVA.

However, I live in Colesville, which is usually about 20 minutes from campus so traffic prayers are probably not necessary.

Not only do they have that history, but add into the fact that they are working on the HOT lanes and the Metro Tyson stop and you have created the perfect storm. Glad to hear that you don’t have to pray to the traffic gods ;)

According to today’s Diamondback, *The Comcast Center’s doors will open at 9 a.m. Spectators will not be allowed to line up outside the arena until 5 a.m. for the 11 a.m. rally, according to an e-mail Provost Nariman Farvardin sent to the campus community yesterday. *

I wonder what this means in terms of reality and people wanting to go see him. I know that D2 really, really wants to go. But if it means being out there at 6:00 a.m…well, you’ve got to know this girl!!!

I know that none of DS’s roommates are going. DS may be required to go since he is ROTC, but he has not heard yet if that will happen. I agree, most of these kids will put out their hands and pretend to weigh the scales…see Obama, sleep…sleep, see Obama.
I just can’t see kids lining up at 5, maybe 7, but not 5 am…unless they decided to do that college kid thing, let’s stay up all night and go at 5

DS does PT every Thursday at 6 am, so when I talk to him after this I’ll ask him how long was the line.

Maybe they changed the plan, because the initial email to band members said there would one ticket per band member. I’ll ask her tonight if she’s heard anything else about it.

D says they are still planning to give each band member one ticket, but they may not get them in hand until early that morning.

You certainly seem to understand why tea party participants want to show up at tea parties, and why protesters want to show up at town hall meetings, so I’m not sure why you don’t understand why Obama supporters would be interested in showing up at Obama appearances. Duh, because they want to see the president and show support for his policies.

Pizza are you a terp parent? I am, and Bullet is a Terp alumni, this is not a political forum. I live 25 miles outside of DC, and GUESS WHAT? I didn’t GO to any tea parties!
Why? Because I would be darned to sit in the traffic! :stuck_out_tongue:  :D

Since I highly suspect that you are “stalking me” for political reasons, I would say that your post was just bad form.

Back on topic…so what time is early morning? Is it the 5 a.m time period?

She says about 8 am.

I do concur that any political debate that may arise from this event should be done over in the Parent Cafe E&P forum. Pima and I aren’t shy about mixing it up there!
