Hi, Im from India… and i have been thinking of applying to a few colleges …
i am very confused, cuz im a laid back person who wants to go to a leberal arts college that has a academic reputation but the wrokload is not too overwhelming… preferably in ohio for personal reasons …please advise me about the colleges i am looking at (title)

Hampshire is much easier to get into than Denison or Oberlin. Denison is a bit of a party/kegger school, while Hampshire and Oberlin are more serious. Oberlin can be a bit snooty. For the “laid-back yet prestigious” feel you seek, Hampshire is the best bet, but it is, unfortunately, not in Ohio.

Laid back yet prestigious (i.e. Hampshire-like) colleges in Ohio: College of Wooster, Hiram College

thanks so much for that … i would like to know more about the type of crowd that denison attracts. i have hear that it is very much like a high school crowd and it is not laid-back at all … I require some help in choosing the right place and knowing more about denison and oberlin

“i have hear that it is very much like a high school crowd and it is not laid-back at all”

I’m not sure what you mean by this. The students are very engaged in their educations and vocal about their college.

I would post on the Oberlin college forum for more information about that school. I don’t think snooty is a good discription at all. There is at least one Indian student who frequents that forum which you might find helpful.

Hampshire is not prestigious. Wooster and Hiram, while excellent regional LACs, are even less prestigious (around the same level as Denison). IIRC, Hampshire tends to attract an equal proportion of brilliant kids and slackers, the latter contributing to its once?-dismal graduation rate. I know things have improved, but Hamp is not yet at Oberlin’s level academically.

I think with Hampshire it depends on who you are. Hampshire, like COA where I live, is very much a niche school (though not as much), and probably has a higher reputation among younger, more liberal populations than people who prefer the majority of the tried and true education system. Again, its in Massachusetts, but Amherst is a nice town
