I am looking at private liberal arts colleges on the west coast, and wanted to know the major differences in atmosphere/student body between these four colleges; basically, the information you can’t glean from the websites. In terms of preference, I am looking at any school that has a rigorous but NOT overwhelming workload, little pressure to partake in substances (I’m straight edge), and a highly accepting community for LGBT students (aforementioned straight edge-ness is the only thing straight about me). I am mostly looking to major in English and transfer out of CC as a junior, if that helps. Opinions are greatly appreciated, especially from those who’ve attended one of these schools! Additional suggestions for schools I may have missed that match the criteria are appreciated as well.
If you don’t want overwhelming, scratch Reed.
All three others would work for your criteria.
Santa Clara is more preprofessional, Occidental is more political.
I’d say apply to all three and see which are affordable, but perhaps add some UCs if you’re in CA because transfers get lousy aid.
If you’re willing to go away from CA, look into Hendrix, Lewis&Clark, Eckerd (excellent writer’s festival).
