Thinking of a little 3-4 day trip in Mid May before the schools let out…

Any suggestions of places to stay? I was thinking of the Castle in the Sand Hotel. One of my co-workers got married there a few years ago.We went back in August and stayed at a Rodeway Inn. It was alright, but quite a walk on the boards to get down to where all the fun stuff is.

Things to do? We obviously spent some time at the beach and we played some mini golf… We also went on a Rocket boat this past summer where we saw some dolphins… and we spent a day at Assateaque (spelling?) Island. Any other suggestions?

Places to eat? We ate at a few places but are looking forward to trying other places this year.

Very popular vacation destination (although not with me). I prefer Bethany and Rehoboth… which are in Delaware but just up the road. Don’t have the high rises and rowdy… although the rowdy factor is not all that bad, I guess. Bad traffic in Ocean City much of the time, but certainly not in mid-May lol.

My brother knows all of the eating spots in the whole area. What type of food and price range/atmosphere do you have in mind?

I’ve been to Rehoboth a couple of times actually. We may stop by there on the way home. We may go on another trip later in the year but this is just a little extended weekend get away.

We’re not a big fan of Rowdy which is why we are going early in the season… Plus I guess it’s a lot cheaper pre-memorial day. To be honest with you I’m worried it will be a little bit too cold but he insists we’ll be fine, haha! I’ve gone to beaches in May before… but they were in SC and FL, lol.

Any food and any price range is fine… My BF is a foodie at heart, lol. I know he’s going to want seafood (crabs in particular however anything else sea food related is fine as well… he’s going to want to eat it all), and last summer we went to a Mexican restaurant which he’s been craving ever since the day we came home. We ate at a place called Hammerheads last year and also a place called Higgens Crab house.

I know he’s going to say that since hotels are so cheap in May we can spend the money we are saving by going early on food, lol. I wouldn’t mind splurging a bit on a nice place one night for dinner… where you cut food with actual silverware and not your hands and a crab cracker thingy… but he would say it’s the beach and that’s the point of going there. I just want to make a list of suggestions.

Last summer when we went I was sick and it really put a damper on our trip. I was conked out by like 9:30 each night and laying out on the beach consisted of the two of us, our towels, a box of tissues, and everyone around us looking visibly annoyed as my sneezing and coughing disrupted their tanning session. ;)

I like going for long weekends to Wildwood, NJ as well. Last summer was the first time I didn’t go there in four or five years.

“Watch the tram car, please. Watch the tram car.”

I like Rehobeth because it is a bit calmer and has a lot of really decent restaurants. Ocean City, Md has nice wide beaches , but the boardwalk is a little blah and I don’t like high rises or all the traffic there…also, be careful that time of year , because the hotels advertise and target high school seniors and prom-crowds…could make for a noisy mini- vaca.
We had a motor home back when our kids were younger and our absolute favorite place to take it was just outside of OC, Assateague…but camping is the only option since it is half state . half national park with no hotels / cabins. Still , the most peaceful place we ever visited

thank you for that chart, i’ll send that to him. To be honest we don’t spend much time in the ocean. I love the food, the sand, the scents, etc… but as far as being in the ocean is concerned, I’m always afraid of being eaten by something. :)

I do however love to lay out on the beach and read a book… I wonder what their air temperatures are like in may. Probably 70’s I would guess.

Castle on the Sands is not on the boardwalk. Do you want to stay on the boardwalk? All of the “action” is probably before 3rd street. I haven’t stayed there for years, though, so can’t help you with current hotels. I think we stayed at a Comfort Inn on 14th or 15th and the boardwalk - near the Kite Loft - last time we were there.

I went to Ocean City a few years back with my boyfriend’s family. We stayed in a condo at a place called the Capri, because we were there for a week. It was nice to have a lot of space, and it had amenities such as a kitchen, washer/dryer, indoor pool, and other rec facilities, but the cleaning job when we arrived was really crappy and we called to have it re-cleaned. Let’s just say we found some questionable stuff and leave it at that. The rates vary depending on when you’re going and which unit you’re getting, and are based on a week’s stay so it might not be the best place for a short trip. Also, it’s right on the water but not near any boardwalks, if I recall correctly.

The one restaurant I remember going to is called Captain’s Galley, if I’m correct. I remembered that it was Captain something and did some googling to match what I remembered. The place has good seafood and crab cakes, specifically, if you like a crab cake that is almost all crab and just enough cake to hold it together. I ordered two but they were huge and I could only eat one.

We also went to another place to get breakfast that was good, but I don’t remember the name at all. All I remember is that they were well-known for chipped beef, if that jogs anyone else’s memory.

EDIT: Again, Google is my friend. I’m pretty sure the breakfast place was General’s Kitchen.

BJ’s on the Water is a must hit restaurant. I believe it is on 75th street. Great atmosphere and food.

Anyway, if you’re making a trip to OC, make sure it is before June hits. It is a huge destination for Senior Week and come the first week of June it will be a bad vacation spot for anyone not a senior ready to party haha.

We were there in the mid 70’s. Shocking, absolutely shocking. We were from Oregon, where even in high summer, you would find just a smattering of souls and the long solitude walks is the norm.

Hmm… I was thinking Castle was on the boards but it looks like they are up a little bit further then where we were last year. Maybe I need to keep looking. I guess we don’t necessarily have to be right on the boardwalk but it would be nice.

We definitely don’t want to be there during senior week. We’re thinking maybe like May 14 -17 or something along those lines. We figured that time of May people are still in school but yet it’s starting to warm up outside.

Thank you for all the food suggestions. A bunch of people have told me that we need to go to Seacrets. They told me that before we went there last summer but as I said I was sick and conked early each night so I was a bit of a party pooper.

I’ll probably plan another trip or two later in the year… Not really sure where to yet. Last year I took like five or six separate trips. I figure since I have 6 weeks vacation I might as well use it. :)

We used to go here every year but sadly have not been since D was small. I would recommend staying at the 20-26th St area of the boardwalk. We always stayed at a hotel called Surf & Sands on 24th, but it has been sold, and although there is still a motel here, I can’t say if it is nice. This is the quiet end of the boardwalk but the action up at the amusement pier end is still not far away.

As far as eating, seafood is great in this area. Down on 26th St. is a all you can eat seafood buffet called Jonah and the Whale. The same folks(I believe Harrison’s) also own a buffet called Paul Revere up toward the other end of the boardwalk. Both are very good and always VERY crowded. I’ve also had good food at the Brass Balls Saloon which I believe is still there.

I’ve been to all the beaches the other posters have suggested, but OC is still my favorite.

We find Seacrets to be interesting people watching. Not sure what it would be like in May. Might be a good place to have lunch, though sunsets on the bay side are quite beautiful; during the warm weather they serve drinks to folks on rafts in the bay. Hedonism reigns. Boaters access it by anchoring and a boat comes out to get you.

We’ve had pretty good food in the past at Harpoon Hannahs. Not sure what it’s like now.

You might do well to find a condo to rent instead of a hotel. I am sure there is so much available to rent in May. But, I hear good things about Princess Royale and Castle in the Sand.

the ocean temps will be cold , but the bay in Assateague is pretty nice , if you wanted to kayak …our kids went swimming there in April one year , and withing a few days , we had snow in southern NJ :D
