***Oct 2014 SAT (US ONLY)***

it was introduction on a playful note. got it wrong. that’s the right answer though.

@sat2014 17. So the first term is 100, and the second term is 100 divided by 50, so 2, the third term is 2 divided by 1, so 2, then the fourth term is 2, the fifth 2, and so on. The answer is (A) One, since only one term is greater than 2.

@sat2014 18. Okay so the temperatures must be between 18 and 26 since the temperatures are 22 ± 4. The answer choices are absolute value, so this will work in choice ©, since x-22 will range from -4 to 4, and therefore |x-22| will range from 0 to 4.

This has to do with understanding how each part of a quadratic equation impacts the graph. In the most basic form, a y= x^2 has a vertex at the origin and points at (-1,1) and (1,1). In ax^2 + bx + c, a affects how vertically the graph is affected (think about plugging values in for x; as x gets larger, a large “a” makes the x^2 even more important, skewing the y values even more). In this case, a single increase in x from the vertex increases y by 2, which is more than normal. Thus a is greater than 1, or (E).

I’m assuming the perimeter says 24. We see that the shaded area is a rhombus with all four sides being the radii of the two circles, so both radii are 6. Also note that XY is 6. If we split the rhombus into four triangles, we have 4 30-60-90 triangles (since we have the a and 2a relationship). This means that the pause angle created by the rhombus is 120 degrees (the sum of two of the 60 degree angles in the 30-60-90 triangles). Now we know that both of the shaded arcs cover 240 out of 360 degrees in each ofthe circles. With the radii being 6, both circles have circumferences of 2pi(6) or 12pi. Since the arcs cover 2/3 of each of the circles, we can say that the length of the shaded arcs is 2/3 (12pi + 12pi), which is 18pi, or ©.

@scarlettlovesivy I put that it was obvious, but I was iffy on that one.

everyone says its obvious but I thought it was pointing out that it was useful at the end idk

does anyone know what the experimental sections were? like what reading passages and question from the math section?

@pizzabagel‌ thanks. 20 I think it was B. 2/3 of 24 is 16 not 18 :slight_smile: but thanks for the explanations!

<a href=“SAT 2012 May Sunday | PDF”>SAT 2012 May Sunday | PDF; check this out. question 16 on the math for the last math section is almost similar to question 16 on the June 2014 sat. Both are about fish! haha, and this one I got right!

It put obvious too. I thought the way the passage talked about it seemed obvious. I can’t remember what the passage was on or the question was about. @scarlettlovesivy‌

I* not ir

I* not it.

I just want to point out that the math curve probably will be harsh, since this math was a little bit easier compared to June test. I have only taken two, so probably my experience is not so good as others who have taken it three or more times.

The June math was way easier than the october math. my opinion but since I suck at SAT math it probably means nothing :P

@sat2014, wow, you’re right. 2/3 * 24 is 16, so it’s (B). I’m glad you figured out my mistake.

Oh FYI when I wrote “pause angle” in number 20 I meant “obtuse angle,” but I was typing on my phone so it got autocorrected.

@pizzabagel‌ props to you for figuring out that problem. I would definately skip it on an actual SAT. Not the best with circles. you take the October SAT?

@sat2014 Yes, I took the October SAT. Math is definitely my forte. I almost always know how to do the problems, although I’ll occasionally make mechanical mistakes, as I did with the 18pi/16pi thing.

@pizzabagel‌ I wish I had your abilities. I can do some hard math problems. My forte is the writing section. I make occasionally some dumb mistakes like for the 2nd to last question I put had a great impact and effect on which should have been greatly affected because the sentence is redundant. CR i have improved from a 460 and I do better on math practice tests. score at least 620/630. Just got a tough one this SAT. Expecting an 800 in math? :)

@sat2014 Yeah I’m expecting an 800 in math, but if I don’t get it, I won’t be too upset since I already got an 800 last year. I mainly have been trying to improve my CR score (it was 580-630, but I’m hoping for 680-740).
