OCTOBER 2009 Writing

There were some tricky questions, but the rest of the test seemed pretty easy.

And yes, I think w/ 2 MC wrong you can still get an 800. But I’m just going off the BB which is supposedly too nice w/ Writing curves.

I don’t want to seem cultish, but jamesford and silverturtle know what they’re talking about. I’ve followed their advice in the past and have noted their 2300+ scores. I am tending to side with their opinion. I used roughly the same logic in picking NE.

However, in the case that the opposition is right, this would indeed be a new precedent in what ETS considers ambiguity.

Yeah, I agree that the answer to the Bartholomew question is no error.

guys enough is enough with the Mr. Bartholomew
regardless of what the answer actually is, at this point nobody is going to turn 180 degrees after vehemently defending their own position for so long, so let’s let this one go.
also does anybody want to try to compile a list of agreed on answers, or at least get one started?

cadillac,

hmmmmmm is saying that the question has an ambiguity ,although hmmmmmm chose NoError.

Isn’t there a difference between the words “obtain” and “attain” and isn’t the word obtain being incorrectly used? Usually to obtain something just means to gain it, whereas attain means to achieve on account of work or something else.

according to the thesourus obtain and attain are synonyms…
and if you want to talk about ambiguity there is NO WAY the CB would make a question regarding the use of diction of obtain/attain, seeing as how they are recognized as synonyms

Oh was there a question about chicken eggs? Or maybe I just hallucinated…

“obtain” and “attain” are subtly different. I think of “obtain” as having a more concrete meaning, whereas “attain” can be used in more abstract contexts.

For example, one wouldn’t obtain a goal, but he or she could attain one.

@silver turtle, then what would your answer be for that question? no error?

hummingbird question, anyone

hey was the question with auditory/audible on the experimental section or the real section

Real.
10reals.

it was auditory was answer.

Things cannot be auditory. They can be audible

Actually things can be auditory.

Auditory refers to something that relates to the sense of hearing. Audible means capable of being heard.

Any thoughts on the scale this year?

I think i’m at -1 Math, -4 or 5 Critical Reading, and -0 Writing (hopefully a 10 essay)

what do you think that might be?

^ Most likely 780 Math, 750-770 Critical Reading, and 800 Writing. Great job!

-4-5 CR should be like 730ish i think

It depends. If it’s 5 wrong (-6), then it would be 730-740ish, but if it’s 4 wrong (-5), then it would be more like 760.

hummingbird question, anyone
