October 2011 SAT General Discussion

wait, isnt the formula for a paraboloa y= a(x-h) + k so the slope would be 5 not 2.5? because h (x-1) so h would be 1, so the initial point would be (1,0) and the other point (3,10)?

just because every seems to be asking about the two overlapping circle question…

it’s 96pi + 64

the radius of the circles was 8
so the area (if not overlapped) would have been 64pi each
but there were two so the total area is 128pi

but you have to subtract the overlapping section from 128pi

to find the area of the overlapping portion
you have to first figure out the area of the of the sector
which you find by multiplying the area of the total circle by 90/360 because 90 is the angle
you get 16pi for this
but you’re not done because you have to subtract the area of the triangle inside the sector which is (8 x 8) / 2 = 32

so from the total area of two full circles (128pi)
you subtract two of the chord area things (since there are two circles)

and your equation is:
128pi - 2(16pi - 32)
= 128pi - 32pi + 64
= 96pi +64

it’s really hard to explain in words…but i hope it was somewhat helpful!

Anyone remembered the question about some renaissance painter “patented” a dome? and it was like tile ceilings… reflects

^yep reflects is what i put too

I walked out thinking I did great and now after reading this blog I feel like I FAILED!

I put 0 for number 18 fill in math. Do u think I’ll get credit?

I’m pretty sure the question said somewhere that k was a positive integer so no sorry :(

It only said a was greater then 0… Idk

Is there any answer about “tried and far found wanting” in the Nuke passage?

If a was greater than 0 and you put 0 I doubt you’ll get credit X_X.

What was #18? Also, student produced responses CAN have more than one answer, but it’s usually one question per test.

For the ceiling tiles question, unfortunately the answer was ‘reflect’ (‘ceiling tileS’ is plural).

@zhouzi - there is. the question was something like: How would the author of Passage 2 respond to Passage 1’s call for cleaner alternative energy (solar, wind, etc.) and the answer was that they’d been tried and found wanting; at least, that’s what I put.

18 was the 10 and 24 sq one. So does 0 work

For the cylinder surface area question, we didn’t have to include the two circular ends did we?

no - ajisai
the answer was 500

No, it was just asking for the surface area of the “paper itself”. Circumference=8pi Height=20 160pi is about 500

Optimistic score, according to the calculator I got:
CR-780 (I wouldn’t count on this…)
Math-690 (lol, yeah right)
Writing-730 (meh, my essay could have got a 10. weak examples)

2210

up from a 2060. There is no way this happened.

Curve predictions, anyone??

Hopefully, generous. I have a feeling that this OCT test is going to be a really nice curve, math wise and POSSIBLY CR wise. writing i predict to be the same

Definitely a generous curve, everyone seemed extremely flustered while doing math in my room. Compare this to last year when I took it in a rural town known for its poverty and stupidity and everyone treated it like it was a breeze.
