October Nor'easter with 10" of SNOW????

S’ college in Conn is without power for 24 hours now and no end in sight. Classes were cancelled for tomorrow. Apparently the school provided a bag lunch but no dinner and no heat. Should residential colleges where students are required to eat and live on campus have adequate generators, or am I expecting too much? I am somewhat concerned since my California son is not used to winter…

Met Ed says we’ll have power by Friday. Or not. Just under a foot of snow yesterday and trees down everywhere. My arthritic dog and I are camping out in my office at the church 'cause she has the acheys and I sleep with apnea machine - was planning to buy a generator closer to December! Life could be worse, as a man living 4 miles from us was killed yesterday when a tree fell on his pre-fab and crushed him. Our church shares a parking lot with another church, and when I arrived this morning I had to call an ambulance for their janitor, who’d fallen on the ice. Plus the woman who went to help him and also fell - head injuries for both.

just back online - huge branch pulled down the wires into our hosue, so we know we are at the bottom of the list to restore. We are staying at neighbor’s house until the power comes back. I spent most of the day unloading the refrigerator and freezer and putting the contents at our church and with neighbors.

The bitter cold temps and shorter days make this worse than Irene IMO. During Irene we lost water for a week - I would much rather be without water than power.

Trains not working tomorrow, so can’t even get into the office.

performer’s mom - they had 31 inches in Peterborough, NH!

DocT I am in north central CT on the Mass border.

Sent from my ADR6300 using CC App

Sounds like Enfield.

Good guess, actually a couple towns to the west, in Granby.

Wow! We’re still in the 80’s here. I can’t remember what being cold feels like! Take care!!!

Made it home from my nephew’s high school football game in the Lower Hudson Valley around 3PM. Snowing heavily. Fallen tree branches along the parkway made waiting at the exit scary. Passed many more tree branches in the local streets but no accidents and made it up the steep incline and into my driveway without incident. However, fell on my backside getting out of the car when I stepped into and slipped on about three inches of slush. Ouch!!!

Those snow numbers in the NH websites are overstated. They said that our town had 21 inches but we had more like 7. Perhaps they are calculating snow equivalent based on water content or were talking about drifts.

The CT power co. spokesperson said today that the tree damage in the state is 5 times that of Irene–which was awful itself. We tried to leave our house to head to a hotel yesterday, but saw that a large limb from our next door neighbor’s tree was blocking our street, and we came back in, figuring we were stuck for the duration–then suddenly the mail truck came tootling past our house. We realized the mail carrier must have been traveling with an ax or something and cleared the way–this guy apparently took that “neither rain nor snow…” thing seriously. Go Postal Service!

BCEagle, my daughter will be in Hanover for an interview Wed and Thurs. Do you know if they have power outages or what the status of that area is?

PSNH had a blog update for Sunday night and there are a lot of major feeder issues as I expected. I saw the update for the number of crews deployed and that will be coming into the area from outside the region and clearly there are bigger problems elsewhere judging by the small numbers (a bit of sarcasm there). PSNH is basically preparing us for a multi day outage, something that we have never experienced before here.

On Hanover, I did not see anything in PSNH’s map about Hanover but NH has many power companies and I do not know which one handles that area. I only have an iPad at the moment and my research capabilities are limited. I will try to check from the office later this morning.

It is currently 25 degrees and I have been waking up every few hours to run water from the faucets so that pipes won’t freeze. I hope that this works. It will be above freezing in about three hours and we shouldn’t have to worry about freezing pipes for the next five days.

Articles showed up about the situation and outlook this morning. PSNH has a statement on their blog that has a bit more detail on what happened. The local Internet newspaper said that 98% does not have power and that we shouldn’t expect it for five days.

Son’s school is closed today because they do not have power so I assume that our other place does not have power today too. But we will keep checking. I am not going out on the roads right now due to black ice concerns.

The one small comfort is the gas stove which is on right now. It is not producing a huge amount of heat but it is a place to warm your hands. I am not sure how long I should keep a stovetop running before thinking about venting issues.

It was a bit eerie driving through cities and towns last night with everything pitch black outside of stars, airplanes and other headlights. A neighbors generator just went on - it is the loudest sound right now besides the ticking of a battery-operated clock and the hiss of the gas stove.

Hang in there. Sounds tough.

As bad as Irene was, the cold weather / snow makes this worse! Stay warm-

School was canceled her today also, daughter is a little disappointed as she has a great costume that she wanted to wear to school. We have no electricity but have a generator so the neighbors are starting to arrive! Our phone is out and that bothers me as we can’t get cell reception but I’ve emailed college daughter and mother-in-law so they won’t worry.

Daughter is supposed to have a phone interview at a college today but when she wakes up she’ll email our contact and let her know that we will have to arrange a time and drive somewhere with reception to call via cell. She hates speaking on the phone and using a cell from our car is only going to make it worse! Oh well, the best laid plans…

I dropped the family off at the YMCA. Son will be doing his research work there and daughter her homework. The parking lot was crowded and there were school kids bringing their laptops in to do their work. I guess that it’s a little nicer than going to the local school shelters.

I’m in the office now charging my electronics and will take a shower. There are a lot of kids and families in the office today. I remember one of the speeches when our building was dedicated and the VP said that this building is about building software but it’s really about building the families of the people working here. That was over 16 years ago.

I’m watching PSNH and National Grid websites and will transport the family to whichever residence gets power first.

Hang in there. Can’t imagine losing power when it is so cold outside! We lost power this summer for a few weeks with temps nearing 120 but not the same.

Our YMCA is out of power like everyone else & closed until who-knows-when…

Our house was 49 degrees this morning…(that’s inside in case you wondered)

I came to work only because I could take a hot shower at the gym, and get a cup of coffee. In return, I’ll do a little work.
