October SSAT's

Hey guys, I’m taking my SSAT in November but I wonder, how was the October tests? Were they easier then the practice tests? Could you tell me the hardest vocab there?

Hmmm… The only word I didn’t know was facsimile, but it was easy enough to guess- an exact copy.

It was wayyy easier than I thought it would be.

Oh, forgive me Saer, for thinking it’s funny that you didn’t know that.

Facsimile is where the word fax comes from. It’s a great example of slang being completely assimilated into a language.

A similar thing happens to trademarks, though the companies that own those trademarks don’t like it at all. How many times do we use windex as a verb? or xerox? Could you hand me a kleenex please?

I’m kind of a word nerd. Can you tell???

The other great divide between your generation and mine is that there are sounds that you have probably never actually heard: the hiss between songs on a vinyl album, a dot matrix printer, a rotary telephone, the click, click, click of the camera’s film advancing to the next frame… and there was this weird sound that the car radio would make when you pressed the buttons to change the channels. It would slide to the next preset station, giving a blur of everything in between.

Sorry…I got carried away. You can have your thread back now.

Ha! I don’t use that word often- and I used the parts of the word to get the answer. simile means the same, right? So exact copy… Made sense.
Yes, it is funny that I’m ignorant to the older things in life. But I do know what a rotary phone is! I feel special…

Anyways, rockerjune, like I said, it is easier than you think as long as you are relatively strong academically. Enjoy it, actually, because stressing out doesn’t help at all!

So guys, do I need to be memorizing vocab like crazy on test day or just placidly reading books or magazines to warm up my brain?

i would not cram the day before. bad for you brain and your morale. get a good nights sleep, eat a good breakfast, and be confident.
