What are the odds of actually receiving outside scholarships? I ask this question because I have many friends who have applied to many scholarships and were unable to get the said scholarships. I know many people say that there’s money out there to pay for college but is that really true because it seems like that while there are money out there to pay for college only a few people are able to actually get that money.

Very low probability unless you are talking about local scholarships available through your school. The vast majority of large scholarships are offered by the colleges themselves.

It varies widely. The game is to find scholarships that you qualify for but a relatively small number of other people do.

For example, if your employer offers scholarships than only people that work there can apply for them and your odds might be very good. As Erin’s Dad mentioned, local scholarships are good too because they typically only offer them to students in a particular town or district.

Those big national scholarship contests that anyone can enter are more like playing the lottery. Yes, someone has to win them, but the odds arent in your favor.
