do you expect the number of students applying to Columbia ed/rd to increase or to decrease?

Decrease. I sense the beginning of a decline in the number of applicants to all colleges.

Have you seen Duke’s and Chicago’s numbers?

I actually think that the number of applicants will increase this year. Although the economy isn’t great, applications to the Ivies will continue to rise. People will decide that although they will not spend money on second tier schools like BU, NYU, etc. they will take their chances on the Ivies for what it represents. In my opinion, all of those that either don’t get into the Ivies won’t spend on the second-tier schools but rather attend much cheaper options like state schools.

Also, in addition to the above, I think it will increase because of parents of students feeling the pressure of going to a good school to secure a good profession and be successful - they realize that jobs will be even more competitve in this economy and global market, and want to give their children as much of an edge as possible - and Ivies give the sharpest edge possible, of course.

I definitely expect it to increase. NYU saw a big jump in ED applicants despite the state of the economy. With the amount of financial aid Columbia grants, I’m sure that the applicant pool will see an even larger jump than NYU’s did.

Not that NYU and Columbia are necessarily parallels of each other in terms of the admission process (because they definitely aren’t), but it just seems like NYU’s jump might be representative of Columbia too.

@jalin- where did you see nyu’s ed numbers?
@arz- how many people applied to chicago/duke?

duke had a 32% increase. i’m not sure about uchicago

I saw NYU’s numbers here: [Early decision applications up; 236 apply to Abu Dhabi | nyunews.com](<a href=“NYU releases admission rates for class of 2016 - Washington Square News”>NYU releases admission rates for class of 2016 - Washington Square News)

Chicago also saw a 32% increase. Yikes :/

[Mathacle Blog: University of Chicago Sees Record Amount of Early Applications for Undergraduate Programs for Class of 2014](Mathacle's Blog: University of Chicago Sees Record Amount of Early Applications for Undergraduate Programs for Class of 2014)

Actually, Chicago had a 54% increase from last year. It was a 32% increase from 2 years ago, when it achieved its record high.

oh wow haha that’s pretty depressing.
