My D was just informed that she has made it off the wait list for MT(NSB). It seems there was quite a few who made it off WL for MT this year. Is this unusual for the program? I was told that the chances of getting off the wait list were pretty slim.

Congrats to her. Yes, in most years, it’s unusual or somewhat unusual. But the economy being what it is and NYU costing what it does, well, I am not surprised. Is she going to go?

Figured as much. The tuition is very steep. Has anyone been successful in wrangling more money from them? D has already accepted a great program and this really threw us for a loop. We never expected her to get off the waitlist. But now it seems I have to bring out my major negotiating skills Yikes!

abco - CONGRATS to your D! We did put in a request for additional scholarship money last year when my D was accepted and got a polite but firm “no” from NYU. But it doesn’t hurt to ask!

Anecdotally, through the years, I’ve never heard of anyone getting more than an additional thousand or two in financial aid in the appeal process. When you’re looking at costs in the vicinity of $60,000/yr., it doesn’t make much of a dent. Unfortunately, I don’t think major negotiating skills are likely to do you much good, abco. If Tisch is going to cause a lot of debt for your D, I would strongly advise against attending.

LOL - I wasn’t sure if the reference to “major negotiating skills” referred to dealing with NYU’s financial aid process, or in dealing with her D!

Your D had excellent choices - if you posted her final decision, I didn’t see it. I would agree with alwaysamom’s final sentence.

Thanks everyone for the advice. You are right about using my negotiating skills more for my D than for NYU! LOL
