Off-Topic Discussion from "Colleges Crossed Off List or Moved Up After Visiting"

I think many colleges lean into their color scheme. My son didnt even like the color orange but loved that buildings and spaces “felt like the college” at Cuse. Now we all wear blue and orange! D25 was one who used school colors to slim her list! It wasnt the only reasons of course but it did help!

My S25 added columns for school colors and mascots to his decision-tracking spreadsheet. smh

D19 actually leaned into the purple as in the intro of her why nyu essay! Not saying it’s why she got in but clearly didn’t hurt. (Her counselor didn’t like the essay, I did…)

Hm… using the school color as a fill might be fun. Not sure it needs a separate column!

For two of my kids colors definitely merited a separate column—one would have been a designer if the siren call of making money hadn’t interfered, and the other one just really, really, really loathes brown and brown-adjacent (sorry, UTA!!) colors.

My kid played a sport and I won’t lie, I was really pleased that he ended up somewhere that his uni was crimson and gray instead of light brown and dark brown (WPI v Lehigh).

Oh yes, the weirdness of campus shape. We spent considerable time with maps understanding how and why we ended up crossing a bridge over a very busy street to get to dorms at Vanderbilt. And why we had to climb the bridge again to find the building we needed. And somehow there was a bridge into the parking. My kid wasn’t as affected, but two bridges and nonstop construction noises really was a big disappointment to me. I won’t go into what sort of corner the music building is shoved into behind all the hospitals and parking buildings. And no shuttle to get to academic courses on time from music. Again, I was more bothered than my kid. But somehow Northwestern campus was too ugly to handle because of brutalist architecture? I thought it was lovely.

My middle daughter toured Lehigh when thinking about playing lacrosse there. Really liked the school until we walked into the bookstore - she took one look at the brown and walked right out. Not a chance she was going there after that.

I also could not get my daughter over the brown color!

I guess that leaves out Brown University too.

My kids definitely lean towards combos with green and blue!

I put Dickinson on my daughter’s ‘look at’ list -and she wanted to rule it out because of the name. But then she looked at the website – and that changed her mind. But seriously - kids can be fickle.

You’d think an athlete would have known this up front. Very funny though. Like building aesthetics in some ways - you’ve gotta see it every day.

Our issue at Lehigh was the dorms…

My son ended up marrying a woman whose college had the same colors as his-orange and blue. I like those colors together.

Not this particular athlete  Again, middle child…

Let’s go Mets, Let’s go Knicks!

My daughter hates hates hates brutalist architecture. Such a silly reason to write off a campus. But when you’re 17 I guess it makes sense.

I’ve written off potential jobs due to brutalist architecture. Some of us deeply care about how pretty our surroundings are.

Right! UCSD is completely off the list only because of brutalism. And so is Harvey Mudd!
