[] Counselor Rec: amazing

[] School Type, Average Stats of School (if available): public, sends some grads to top schools (this year we have 7 people into ivies, one into stanford, 2 into MIT, one into duke, and one into juilliard, but i think that’s a little higher than usual)

[] Gender: Male
[] Strengths/Weaknesses: Weakness: I have no AP’s under my belt yet.
[li] Why you think you were accepted or rejected: Band athlete combo[/li][/ul]Other Factors: I’m a twin.
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: I’m so happy, but yet I can’t be too happy because my twin brother got waitlisted at Boston College, his dream school. He isn’t quite as smart as me, and I hope to God he eventually gets in. If anyone else out there is from Iowa, send me a message!

Decision: ACCEPTED!

Stats:[ul]
[] SAT: 800 CR, 760 M, 710 W

[] GPA: 6.3/7.0
[] Rank: n/a
[] Other stats: Bilingual IB Diploma candidate (English and French)
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: Growing up as a foreign service brat (posted [here](<a href=“http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=291193"]here”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=291193))
[] Teacher Recs: Presumably excellent
[] Counselor Rec: Should’ve been good; don’t know for sure
[] Activities: School newspaper (section editor and photography editor), black and white photography, Amnesty International, volunteering at a hospital, equestrian, chemistry tutor, Spanish independent study
[] Hook (if any): Fluent in three languages and self-studying a fourth; submitted a photography">http://www.■■■■■■■■■■/photos/cameliasinensis"]photography portfolio/url; international background; very good essay

[] School Type: Private international
[] Ethnicity: White (Scandinavian)
[] Gender: Female
[] Intended Major: Social sciences… geography, maybe?
[] major strength/weakness: “International” (the ultimate anti-hook), but passionate, involved, and a good writer; I think my art supplement helped as well
[/ul]Other Thoughts: In retrospect, I’m almost glad Princeton rejected me. I’d idealized it as my “dream school”, but in many ways I actually think Dartmouth is a better fit for me. I can’t wait to meet all of you in person! :)

Decision: ACCEPTED

Stats:[ul]
[] SAT: 2340 (CR: 800; M: 760; W: 780)
[] SAT IIs: Math II: 800; World Hist: 780; Lit: 740
[] GPA: No idea because I’ve been to very different school systems; I do know that I was a terrible (as in Cs and Ds for some subjects) student two years ago, and I’ve had a huge upward trend (straight As, topped my class last semester, though currently my school doesn’t rank)
[] Rank: -
[] Other stats:
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: Wrote mainly about why I hated my “education” in Malaysia an why I prefer the liberal arts-style education; don’t know how good this was.
[] Teacher Recs: Thought they were great, but in hindsight they could’ve been much better. One rec I was banking on ticked the best boxes, but comprised only two sentences: “In my 30 years of teaching, I have not met many brilliant students; John is one of them. If you require further information, please contact me.”
[] Counselor Rec: Ok I guess.
[] Hook (if any): Very unorthodox education; I’ve been to five different schools in my whole life, and I self-studied to take a special exam just to get out of my old high school (basically graduate early so I could take advanced courses at my new school). No idea how effective this was, since HYP, Swarthmore, Grinnell and Macalester rejected me, while Williams waitlisted me.
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: Malaysia
[] School Type: Pre-university Department of a private college (attended public schools for six years previously)
[] Ethnicity: Mainly Chinese, with about 30% Filipino mixed in
[] Gender: M
[] Intended Major: Economics, though I have an interest in political science and public policy, so this could change
[li] major strength/weakness: I was sort of banking on my heavy involvement in activities such as debate (I got into the semi-finals of the debating competition at my school, which is pretty big when you consider I’m actually in a college and was competing against degree students) and politics (I wrote several major articles on Malaysian politics on Wikipedia, and run a website that a number of Malaysian political functionaries monitor). I think most of my crucial activities were in the last few months, though; I only found out how influential my site is when I was introduced to one of those functionaries. I probably could have gotten a rec from one of them, but oh well. No point second guessing. Dartmouth, here I come! :D[/li][/ul]

I wasn’t gonna do this… but after reading a “chances” thread posted by an anxiety-ridden parent, I thought I should offer up my full stats to show that Ivies care about more than test scores, and CC 2400 kids probably aren’t representative of the entire Dartmouth class. :)

Decision: Accepted!

Stats:[ul]
[] SAT: 770 V, 620 M, 720 W
[] SAT IIs: World- 660. U.S.- 770. Lit- 730
[] GPA: 3.9 Unweighted, 4.5 Weighted
[] Rank: 27/303
[] Other stats: APs: World- 4, US- 5, Eng Lang- 5, Enviro- 4
[/ul][ b]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: Worked very hard on it, humorous and (hopefully) insightful
[] Teacher Recs: I sent in three (one supplementary from my debate teacher)… one was awesome, the other pretty good, the final one was eh.
[] Counselor Rec: Very good
[] Peer Rec: I thought I’d add this category just to note that I had one of the most amazing peer recommendations I bet Dartmouth has ever seen. I owe my friend eternal gratitude.
[] Hook (if any): None
[/ul][ b]Location/Person:
[ul]
[] State or Country: Fl
[] School Type: Public magnet school for the arts
[] Ethnicity: White
[] Gender: Male
[] Intended Major: Dunno. Government, maybe?
[] major strength/weakness: Very good writer, very dedicated to extracurricular activities/leadership. Poor math SAT score, not the best rank
[/ul]Other Factors:
Extracurriculars were probably a big factor. I’m very involved in Amnesty international on multiple levels (school, local, national), I’ve won some national awards for forensics, and I’m assistant editor in chief of the school newsmagazine. Instead of just creating a “brag sheet,” I designed a resume in the form of a small picture book that I bound at kinko’s, with a picture for each activity on the left hand side and then bullet points on the right.

Now that I’ve decided on Dartmouth, I feel that I ought to post my stats for the younglings who trashtalk Dartmouth.
Decision: Accepted!

Stats:

* SAT: 770 V, 800 M, 700 W

 • SAT IIs: U.S.- 800. MII 800 Physics- 760

[ b]Subjective:**

*Essays: Probably ideal for Dartmouth’s community centric values

 • Teacher Recs: ? Probably Great

 • Peer Rec: Fantastic

[ b]Location/Person:**

* State or Country: NH!

 • School Type: Large Public (3 got into ivies this year)
 • Ethnicity: White
 • Gender: Male
 • Intended Major: Econ or Geography

Other Factors:
I got a likely letter in February and was pretty sure I’d got into at least one of Harvard, Yale, or MIT. I got waitlisted at Harvard and rejected at Yale and MIT. I had difficult interviewers for Yale and MIT and Harvard took a lot of locals in the early round. I feel like I made the right decision in the end, but if I was playing to please the prestige whores I should’ve picked reached schools outside of southern New England!

How does Dartmouth notify the EDs? Is it through an e-mail.

after reading this i feel like i have no chance.
3.4 uw…but with EXTREME extenuating circumstances.
2330 SAT
Havent taken SAT II’s yet. (Math IIC, French, (Maybe bio or some other science))
Only taken AP Calc AB and havent received scores back yet…i go to a private school that doesnt have AP classes. i took calc on my own behalf…
Im white
Im poor
Im a first generation college student.
I have lots of non-special ec’s.
I’m ****ed…:frowning:
Dartmouth is my dream school.

First Genenration? In man! :D

First generation doesnt guarentee you a spot, but your GPA could be offset by either your circumstanes or essays so keep your fingers crossed =]

Well yeah that is what I meant. I mean if he can mention about this school not offering APs and him taking calc on his own with that SAT score AND being First Generation helps ;)

:D
So much hope now…
If i get rejected…Ill blame all you :D!!!

So your magic formula is

First Generation + Great SATs + Calc + US Citizen = IN ! :D

Decision: Accepted

Stats:[ul]
[] SAT: 2379 (790/790/790 <=consistency ;D)

[] Counselor Rec: Fantastic.
[] Hook (if any): I know two target languages, started a business (now with 200+ clients), lots of leadership positions.
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: West Coast.
[] School Type: Sends some grads to top schools.
[] Ethnicity: Asian.
