I got in!

Here is my dilemma:
I got into Dartmouth, Cornell, Vandy, Middlebury, and Emory with no financial aid whatsoever.

Rice and Tulane are giving me about $25,000/yr.

My heart is completely set on Dartmouth and if I have to pay student loans til the next millenium I will; there’s nothing I’d rather spend my money on.

Is it worth it??

I would strongly consider Rice. Have you visited?

I am visiting for Owl Days (don’t laugh) in early April.

People seem happier at Rice…like they go there not for the prestige/Ivy League but because they actually want to be there…plus the college system is a huge bonus.

Dartmouth is obviously strong academically but I want to make sure I’m not going to a homogeneous school.

@Wharf Rat

Lol…they would kick you out of Dartmouth the day you break the son’s heart!!

Congrats btw :D

I’m an alum whose son gotdeferred from Ed but was rejected, (ending a 5 generation 8 person legacy.) I would tell you I think it is definitely worth it compared to what I know about the schools you mentioned, esp. Middlebury. But the isolation of Hanover and the winter etc. can definitely be difficult for some; also for some the competitiveness (remember how few got in) of those there can also be a turnoff, and lead to some lonely times for some. I myself struggled with the winter isolation stuff as I was a NJ suburban kid used to going into Philly for fun. I keep in touch with a lot of alums of D at all ages and I just can’t find one who regrets going, but its basically the only thing they know. I would definitely recommend that you visit there, do an overnight and really look at yourself and see if its a fit for YOU. It may sound silly but try JuicyCAMpus and talk to some kids there now. You’d be surprised what answers you can get. Congratulations on your acheivement.

I think the recently released admission figures show a 50% of color in terms of offers of admission. You might want to check with the Admissions office…

Decision: Rejected

Objective:[ul]

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Physician Shadowing, Research, StuCo (secretary), NHS, 3 years school baseball, Boy Scouts (senior patrol leader and Eagle Scout)
[] Job/Work Experience: 5 years working as youth baseball umpire, and other employment always/year round
[] Volunteer/Community service: lots. Shoulda kept better track of my hours.
[] Summer Activities: Work, and Native American Youth Initiative program
[] Essays: Really good, but not super original or exciting. About my shadowing.
[] Teacher Recommendation: IDK
[] Counselor Rec: Most likely fantastic
[] Additional Rec: none
[] Interview: Pretty good. Not my best, but I’d say an A if it were for a grade.
[/ul]Other[ul]

[] Intended Major: Chem
[] State (if domestic applicant): TX
[] Country (if international applicant):
[] School Type: Public Magnet

[] Gender: Male
[] Income Bracket: ~130k
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Native American, but once again, didn’t help that much obviously.
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Courseload (hardest of anyone at my school, I’m certain.
[] What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: My passion for science and medicine, as well as that I actually am somewhat related to my tribal heritage. Obviously not good enough.
[] Weaknesses: GPA GPA GPA GPA.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: SubPar GPA is the only thing I can really think of.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: It seems to me like they really care a lot more about grades than they let on. obviously, because it is the Ivy League, but I guess mine just weren’t good enough. It seems like they’d rather you took 5 AP’s and have all A’s than take 10 AP’s and make 4 A’s and 6 B’s
