Official 2005 - 2011 Decision Thread

Not sure where to put this…but, how many SAT II’s does Dartmouth require?

I got in from the waitlist.

All you need is two.

**Decision: Deferred **

Stats:[ul]
[] SAT: 2300 (800 Verbal, 800 Writing, 700 Math)
[] SAT IIs: 770 Math 2, 720 English Lit
[] GPA: 4.05 Weighted-I guess that was the missing piece :frowning:
[] Rank: school doesn’t rank
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: I think very good. Writing is my strong suit–my personal statement was about taking up dance again after a 4 year hiatus, and the difficulties/growth that came with that. Creative/sometimes humorous I’ve been told?
[] Teacher Recs: I haven’t read them, but I guess my counselor said they were “glowing”?
[] Counselor Rec: I think good.
[] Hook (if any): Developed my own research project as part of a clinical study of psychopathic teens at USC; my results will be published in a research paper in the spring. My mentor, USC Professor, wrote me a great rec.
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: CA
[] School Type: Private
[] Ethnicity: Caucasian/Asian
[] Gender: Female
[] Intended Major: Psychology or English
[] major strength/weakness: Strengths: writing, research project, very good 1.5 hour long interview Weaknesses: GPA killed me :frowning:
[/ul]Other Factors: National Merit Semifinalist
Although part of me knew this was the most likely outcome, I’m still heartbroken :(. I know things happen for a reason, but it does feel pretty bad right now. This is difficult for me because I’ve worked incredibly hard but my grades (no C’s, but a lot of B’s and one B-) don’t reflect that because of some pretty harsh personal problems that I couldn’t explain or write about. I can’t help feeling sad, but for everyone who was accepted: you’ve done great and I wish you only the best.

Hey all you dartmouth-ers!
I myself did not apply but my best friend did and she was ACCEPTED. (she doesn’t have a CC account ).
She is ranked 1 out of 800 and has a weighted GPA of above 4.2 ( I think ) our school is highly competitive and many go to top schools. . Her recommendations were excellent ( all the teachers love her ) essays were good. She is the southwest district governer of key club and has done a lot of community service and good ec’s . Not a legacy. White female .

Congratulations to all of you who were accepted
From a university of Chicago ea applicant!

I still can’t really believe it. Wow. It’s just amazing. Congrats to everyone else who got in. To the people who got deferred just remember that you still have a chance and now you can open up your opportunities to other schools. And to those people who got rejected all I can say is to not feel bad because honestly it’s hard to judge people. I really really really didn’t think I was going to get in with my stats and somehow through my essay and recs and everything else I swayed them so just try and portray yourself in the truest light and everyone will want you.

**Decision: ACCEPTED **

Stats:[ul]
[] ACT:28
[] SAT IIs: Both 580
[] GPA:3.6
[] Rank: School doesn’t rank until end of year
[] Other stats: Um SAT was just bad
[/ul][ b]Subjective:**[ul]
[] Essays: I wrote about knitting and how through it I changed during high school
[] Teacher Recs: Very good. Both teachers have taught me and seen me outside of school (I go to boarding school)
[] Counselor Rec: Amazing. She loves me and after she wrote it she said to me “I did so good on your rec.” hah
[] Hook (if any): I knit?
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: From New Jersey but go to school in Connecticut
[] School Type: College preparatory boarding school
[] Ethnicity: African-American
[] Gender: Male
[] Intended Major: Biology
[li] major strength/weakness: Weakness: GPA, SATIIs Strengths: A lot of ECs and an interesting essay[/li][/ul]Other Factors: My application was a very good representation of me and my third rec was written by a Dartmouth alum.

 • Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Scores and essay probably got me to waitlist status.
 • Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Rejected HYP, Penn, Columbia, Williams, and UChicago; waitlisted Dartmouth and Carleton; accepted UWashington and UPortland (safeties).

General Comments: Congrats to all accepted students, I’m sure you were all truly deserving of it! I’ll be accepting a spot on the waitlist, but not placing too much hopes on it.

Weaknesses: Essays (didn’t spend as much time as I should have)
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Who really knows? Do what you love.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Stanford (rejected), Duke (waitlisted), accepted to Dartmouth, Princeton, Harvard, Yale, Brown, Cornell, Columbia, UPenn, Williams, Amherst, Oxford, Emory, Vanderbilt, UChicago, WashU, Northwestern, Georgetown, NYU, Carnegie Mellon, Cal Tech, MIT, UCLA, UC Berkeley, Johns Hopkins, Michigan, Oxford, Tufts, Boston University.
General Comments: Good Luck!! The moral of my story is to not apply to a lot of colleges because Stanford didn’t accept you in the EA round. Though apparently a lot of people did this. Also, don’t get down because you got rejected by Stanford and waitlisted by Duke. The Ivies might still like you!

anonymous93–you applied to 30 schools. this is really sick

I know. It was a mistake. I swear it wasn’t because I just wanted to be accepted everywhere. I was planning on only applying to Stanford/Duke/Princeton, but then Stanford rejected me. So I thought I would broaden my base to include more of a variety. I just thought that I fit a certain “mold” that only certain types of schools would like, and I wasn’t sure which schools those would.

Decision: Waitlisted

[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I have absolutely no idea. I am probably last on the wait list but honestly I’m so thankful. Maybe because Dartmouth is so predominately white and they needed a hispanic in the wait list…

Son accepted. However, he received an amazingly TERRIBLE Fin Aid offer – especially when compared to Duke (which was just ok), and WashU (which was competitive with his two state schools). We are only waiting on the Cornell Fin Aid offer. Then the family will have to have a few long talks. I really wish Dartmouth had demonstrated more interest – as the school really seemed to fit my son.
