SAT(old): 1570
SAT(new):2160(I got a 660 in Writing, thought my SAT 2 might mitigate that)
SAT IIs: Math II/Chemistry/USH/Writing 790/760/750/760
GPA: about 3.6-7
Rank: top 10%
Other stats: Chem, Phys C, Calc AB and BC, Eng Lang, US Hist (all 5 except 4 on US)
Subjective:
Essays: wrote about how train obsession has influenced me (thought it was great, showed it to two teachers who agreed)
Teacher Recs: never saw them ( can only assume they were good)
Counselor Rec: never read it, probably OK
Hook (if any): Trains. Models, protoypes, know loads of uselss info, design specs, railroad history etc. currently building a live steam kit(OK, so its not a fusion reactor)
Location/Person:
State or Country: FL
School Type: Private
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Male
Other Factors: Im currently one of nine kids in my school taking multivariable calculus (took BC junior year)
Extracurriculars: Math team president, FSO, JETS, AMC, AIME, National Chem olympiad, and I teach hebrew to kids with severe learning disabilities, and doing chem research
Why I think I was accepted/deferred: MIT seems to dislike my school (a year ago they rejected a kid who took multi his junior year and was taking freakin linear algebra. He had written and published a math proof) They rejected another friend who got into Yale. (I myself got into Columbia, it was the only Ivvy I applied to).
Other thoughts: Oh well, wasn’t really expecting to get in.

oops, copied my caltech decision thread to mit. i wasn’t accepted. sorry guys.

Other Factors:HOLY CARP I GOT IN!

^^hahahaha sorry i know it’s just a typo, but that gave me the funniest image in my head lol. a holy carp :)

accepted.

why i got in? i wrote 3 really good essays (according to my own opinion).

 1. about my parents working hard for their children
 2. my passion for science and how i plan to share that passion
 3. math equations predicting the future

if you like, you can pm me for any of the essays.

my advice for future applicants: don’t worry about stats too much. as long as you’re in the right range, it’s all good. and by that, i mean 650+. also, creativity with your essays and responses will give you a good chance at mit (and probably at other schools too).

Good advice. But you should probably shoot for 700-750+

Just for the benefit of future applicants, I post my stats too.

Decision: Rejected
SAT:1st take - CR690/M800/W680, 2nd take - CR740/M800/W730
SAT IIs:Math II 800/Physics800/Chemistry800
GPA: not calculated
Rank:1 of 110
Essays: the long one - about how the International Mathematical Olympiad was like almost something I didn’t even dare to dream when I began highschool, but then I sort of said ‘why not?’ and gave it a go, and built up to it for years, ended up getting a bronze medal, but I didn’t feel ecstatic or whatever, so how it was kind of disappointing, but then realised it was because I just really enjoyed the people I met along the way and the maths I got to learn and the experience of travelling, blah blah, so I was ‘content’ rather than really really happy that I got a medal, then sort of drawing an analogy to MIT and whether or not I can handle, sort of finishing with ‘why not?’. I guess it was kind of corny, people thought it was alright though.
The short ones - Just about piano playing, and how I just taught myself because I was kind of lonely when I immigrated to New Zealand, and how it’s meaningful to me, blah blah. The other one just about my academic ambitions/interests and how MIT is suitable for it. They weren’t that good, I didn’t spend too much time on them.
Teacher Recs: Sent in three. My physics teacher wrote things along the lines of “in the right environment, Eric will be able to significantly add to humanity’s understanding of the Universe”, which I thought was a big call. A university professor wrote things like “I would dearly like Eric to attend this university, but we cannot offer enough to fulfil his potentials”, my English teacher who I also know personally wrote pretty much how great a guy she thinks I am. So they were pretty good I thought.
Counselor Rec: Pretty good too, pretty much “the best in my career, best in the history of the school”, “he will do exceptionally well wherever HE CHOOSES to attend”…
Hook/other achievements: I guess the IMO bronze medal? Obviously not big enough. Have taken university papers in 1st year accelerated maths, 1st year theology, 2nd year accelerated linear algebra, 2nd year quantum physics, 2nd year electromagnetism (during highschool), currently taking 3rd year group theory, 3rd year thermal, statistical, particle physics, 3rd/4th year quantum mechanics, and 3rd/4th year classical mechanics papers (incidentally, this paper uses the same book that the most advanced undergraduate classical mechanics paper at MIT uses as well) [In New Zealand, school year starts in February and finishes in November]. One of eight to receive the Premier award (the highest award possible) in the New Zealand scholarship exams, first in the country in maths in various competitions/exams, other various national level scholarships, NZ representative in selective programmes, such as to The Hague International Model UN or the USA International Space Camp, working on the diploma of Associate of Trinity College of London in Piano Recital, member of the school senior A debating team for 3 years, regional rep at the nationals for debating, coach of the debating team in my final year of highschool, various best speaker awards, other random things like playing rugby for the school, entering short story competitions, composing a school song, running quite a few scholarship classes at school, tutoring, school prefect, etc.
Country: New Zealand
Ethnicity: Korean
School type: Integrated (religious, but sort of public and sort of private)
Gender: Male
Other Factors: Not sure, they couldn’t interview me, cuz they didn’t have anybody in New Zealand, appied for fin.aid. although I don’t think that matters in admission, what other factors are there?

Hopefully someone next year would find that helpful in some way.
I’m not like bitter about it or whatever, although it might sound like it a little.
I know there are a lot of good applicants, and it’s quite hard for internationals.
I’d be somewhat interested to hear people’s opinions on why I got rejected though.
Not saying that I shouldn’t have been rejected, nothing like it.
Just curious to see what people think.
Anyways, good luck to those of you who have been accepted.
For the rest of us, hopefully we’ll get in somewhere where we will enjoy just as much.

Regards
Eric

jeez Eric, i think u shoulda been accepted. Crazy application u got there.

yeah your app is like amazing!! where else did you apply?

What the heck! How did you get rejected? IMO Bronze? I’m not sure of the stats from New Zealand but just qualifying to take the IMO makes you top 6 out of hundreds of thousands of AMC 10/12 takers.

Well, the population of New Zealand is far smaller than that of the US, it’s about 4 million.
I think there are about 250 medallists at the IMO per year.

I applied early to Harvard, got deferred.
Also to Caltech, got rejected.
Waiting on Harvard, Yale, Princeton and Stanford.

I really don’t wanna get my hopes up, but Princeton’s financial aid office sent me an email a couple of days ago saying that I didn’t fill out their Princeton Financial Aid thing online.
I did, so I replied, and they said, okay, yeah we have it.
I mean, I’m not trying to extrapolate or whatever, but isn’t that sort of weird though?
Decisions would have been made, it wouldn’t make sense for them to evaluate your financial applications if you haven’t been accepted, you know.
But then surely Princeton is not that stupid to make such a mistake.

So I don’t know.
I’ll wait and see.

Regards
Eric

General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc:
MIT is very…interesting these days.

Wow, interesting_mov, it is seriously MIT’s loss. I know you will get into other great schools!

Do you think MIT rejected the people that were REALLY close to being admitted, instead of waitlisting them? Maybe to allow the people to look into other schools and not have their heart set on getting off the waitlist. Some of the people that got rejected are just so wonderful…

You know, interesting_mov, I bet you’re one of the kids who Ben Jones cries over when you don’t get accepted. Undoubtedly, you’re still going to go to an amazing school even if it’s not MIT, and you’re going to do amazing things.

I think us trying to figure out which students Ben cried over is an unwise venture, considering that all we have here are statistics. Essays, letters, interviews forge a personality and likable character in the minds of those who are in charge.

I don’t mean to imply anything about people who have already posted, but let’s keep in mind these statistics are a very small window into the admissions committee, and without everything else, I highly doubt we’re getting a good view.
