This thread has made me realize how little hope I have for next year O_O…

Don’t say that, my stats aren’t even half of many of this people and I still got in. So you just have to work hard and let the admission staff that you really want to go to MIT and that you’re going to do your best at MIT and get the most out of such a wonderful opportunity.

~ Real passion helps more than good stats ~

i second that. =]

man, all my hopes and dreams have gone down the drain…

oh yeah, i’ve noticed that almost all the people who’ve gotten accepted did some kind of research stuff during their high school career.

That’s not quite true. If you’re referring to people doing lab work, you’ll be surprised to find that only a good percentage (<50% still) people have done that kind of research.

This board doesn’t reflect real life or the applicant pool in general.

Most MIT admits have never done research before coming to MIT.

That may be true, but it’s still disheartening to see all the 4.0GPA/2400SAT/valedictorians get rejected and know you have NOTHING on them but still really, really, really want to go to MIT. I had seen the EA decision thread but not this one and reading through and seeing all the final rejections was depressing. I realize I’m a person, not a bunch of stats, and MIT will see me as such but nevertheless…:-/

That’s why the HYPSM are complete crap shots. It was depressing for me before I applied, but you should not be discouraged from applying. MIT isn’t looking for stats; they’re looking for your passions, your stories…

It’s not about the numbers…I’m walking proof of that. For the most part, at least this is what I’ve observed, the 2400/4.0/valedic/four-time USAMO people are really boring. Not that they all are, but the ones that I’ve met mainly have lives that revolve around school/SAT prep/academic stuff ALL the time. MIT does not want boring people. Hence, other people with not so great number stats get in. And you never know. When I started senior year, MIT was far from my mind. On March 17 (day before decisions went out) I was still wasn’t thinking about MIT because I knew that my stats weren’t as good as everyone else’s. Obviously stats aren’t everything. So, good luck, and don’t be discouraged because you never know! :)
