Official 2011 AP Chemistry Thread

AP Chem sucks!!! My biggest regret of junior year, so far, has been taking that class.

Really? AP Chem is so far probably my favorite junior year class. Interesting and challenging at the same time but not too much so. It is extra stress, but the pure nerdy joy of chem makes it worth it for me.

Where are all of your classes? We just finished solution chemistry before break and we’re doing a quick unit of organic this week, not sure about after.

We just started thermochemisty.
Am I behind.

Love chemistry,it’s challenging and fun at the same time…We’re on kinetics:rate laws…easy…

So, I have a question for other AP Chem-ers out there.

I’m a senior taking AP Chem. I took AP Bio and Calc last year and was able to pretty much cram at the last moment and get a 5/4 on the tests (respectively). To be honest, I have not paid any attention in class for the past several months. I have a pretty strong Honors Chem background which has allowed me to get an A in the class this past semester and get by. However, I have done NO studying on my own, and have only put minimal work into my HW. Pretty pathetic? I know. However, any students who have experience with AP Chem, basically I’m wondering how far can I push off this not studying routine if I’m planning on doing some serious cramming before the test? I want to get a 5, and I’m know I’m capable, but I’m just wondering how much time I might need.

Thanks a lot!

An issue that I’m curious about:

How many of you guys take AP Chemistry as first-year chemistry?

I’m actually reasonably happy with the Chang textbook. Perhaps it’s because our teacher’s explanations are even more confusing…?

We’re finishing Nuclear Chemistry… I feel we’re going a bit fast. Hmm. Our goal is to finish the course by the end of next month (we have a two week vacation after midterms next week).

I’m taking ap chem as my first-year chemistry :D

What do you guys think of this class? I think it’s pretty easy compared to AP Physics B. I was a bit skeptical at first, but AP Chem is a breeze in terms of workload compared to AP Lit. I don’t know why people think it is hell. Maybe the teachers are making harder than it really is?

I’m taking this because my school offers chemistry (but no APs).

I’m curious to see how you all study for your class tests in AP Chem. My teacher makes her exams cumulative (and much harder than the AP) and the combination of practice problems from Zumdahl and class notes + review book doesn’t seem to helping my grade much.

^ That sounds brutal. My teacher has tests that are more focused on the topics we’re learning, but the questions are harder and her grading style is also pretty harsh. (A couple sig fig errors turns an A to a C+). However, you’re probably going to have to review very little before the AP test while people like me are trying to recollect everything that happened in the last 8 or so months… sooo it might be a good thing.

The “difficulty” of the class is probably due to teachers. For me, AP Chem sorta sucks because we get a c r a p load of work and she expects everyone to do it without complaint or hesitation, probably because a lot of people in my class are no-life try-hard i-<3-school nerds, the type of nerds you actually hate since they kiss up to the teacher and try to push everyone else down in order to stand out.

Other than that, it’s my 2nd year taking chem & my school uses Zumdahl|Zumdahl. Everyone who took Chem AP last year at my school 5’ed the AP test. Nooo pressure. (Lol pun)

Hi! I took AP chemistry last year and got a 3. I recall skipping 7 M/C and many parts of the FRQs. In fact, I think the only question I truly answered was the very last one. xD

Anyways for review books, use Princeton Review(albeit I hardly used it so that is why I probably got a 3 instead of something higher). We bought Barron’s and the wordiness of it already scared me.

As I neared the AP exam date, I tried looking for cram sheets and one here is good(with solubility rules, colors, ions)

Google AP Chem stuff… I know one person found this huge pdf booklet printed it out and we all crowded around it. and what we learned about 10 minutes before we went to our rooms actually allowed me to get a question right on the exam!

Good luck.

by the way, my teacher had a very low pass rate, our class had 8 people pass total. the year before, about 3.

We just took our Kinetics test last week and now we’ve moved on to equillibrium. Joy … Ugh, AP Chemistry is … rough, for me at least. It’s the hardest class I have :frowning: Makes AP Bio seem like a breeeeeeze. Tests cost 60% of our grade which I do horrible on. Sigh

Wait, nevermind. Forget my last comment. What I meant was, in comparison AP chem is 10 times harder than Biology - I have both of them now. Biology is easier since it’s all based on memorization.

Hello!
I am currently studying for Chemistry Honor; next year, I am taking AP Chemistry class. Our school uses “Chemistry: Matter and Change” but I bought “Chemistry: The Central Science” and “Barron’s SAT Chemistry.” I am consider to take this Chem. Honor level as AP level and study as equal to AP level for next year’s AP Chem class. Do you use prep books, if so what brands do you recommend?

Where is everybody at in AP Chem? I am taking honors Chemistry at my school and I would like to take the AP Chemistry test this year. I am just going to self-teach myself out of a prep book what we do not cover in class. Anyway, I would like to have an idea of where everyone is at so I can start gauging my study needs.

We are finishing up the solutions and kinetics units in the Brown textbook. Final next week.

Anyone else’s AP Chem teacher not doing a good job at teaching? Haha, hate my life.

I’m finding the class a lot easier now. I think partially I just had to get used to my teacher’s teaching style and just the general difficulty of the class… I’d never really taken a class before that had challenged me at all. Another big part is that my class started with the hardest chapters (well, that is what my friend’s tutor said).

My class is doing the second part of acids and bases now (focusing mostly on buffers, titrations, etc). It’s mostly a review of equilibrium so it isn’t too bad.
