I’ve noticed that a few of the other APs for 2011 have had a thread, so why not one for Chemistry?

Well, I might as well post
Do you guys have any recommendations of what I should study before next year?
I haven’t take Honors Chem and AP Chem is 2nd year chem class at my school, so advice on what to study would be appreciated

Well, I’m taking this class next year so any advice would be appreciated!

Has any of you obtain an ion list from your AP Chemistry teachers? If not, I recommend that you find one on the Internet and memorize the ions.

I have… I haven’t started memorizing it yet though :P

^I believe I received one of those in Honors Chem as well.

^I have one and already have many of the ions memorized. I guess I should memorize the rest. Any other tips?

I’m taking AP Chem next year too. A friend told me to buy an AP Prep book for AP Chem and look through it. It helps!

AP Chem is supposed to be the hardest class in my school; AP Physics comes close. I’m kind of scared, because the hardest part of the class is the labs, and I’m terrible at labs (as I learned in honors chemistry this year)… :(

Which prep book should we use? My friend who self-studied AP Chem and got a 5 recommended PR, but I would like more opinions.

(Is there a specific set of ions we need to memorize?)

Words of comfort: AP Chemistry is as hard as you make it to be. Though I self-studied it (from IB Chem HL), chemistry is a very intimidating subject. Just stay positive! Chemistry is such a fun, rewarding, and important course and try and enjoy the material! The exam itself is pretty simple. I have heard multiple people not even study for the exam and get a 4/5. Chem is amazing :)

Here’s the ion list. Ones you do not have to memorize are the ions with the charge +5.

I recommend Princeton Review for preparing for the AP Exam. The information is concise yet informative enough to prepare you for the AP Exam and Princeton Review has a chapter that prepares you for FRQ #4.

Alright thanks. Does anyone have any idea what the curve is for grades of 3, 4, and 5? I know it’s kind of early but I’m curious as I’m sure others are.

2008 AP Chemistry Exam: <a href=“Supporting Students from Day One to Exam Day – AP Central | College Board”>Supporting Students from Day One to Exam Day – AP Central | College Board;

The curve has been adjusted to reflect the new MC policy: the no penalty rule.

^For some reason, the first page shows up blurred on my computer.

^That’s odd…

Without the penalty, the raw score curves are:

5 = 100-150
4 = 81-99
3 = 62-80

I have an iMac, maybe that’s why. It does the same thing on some of the AP grade distribution pages on the collegeboard site. Thanks, energize.

There are some things that you sometimes have to memorize, like specific ions that have extra electrons, but I must emphasize that understanding the material is the easiest way to do well in this course. If you understand how things work in chemistry, you can tackle any problem thrown at you.

Advice:

Relax, you have a whole year.
It’s really not that bad. I got a 5. It was an easy test.
If you want tips, PM me… I’d be glad to help. I’m a Chemical Engineering major.

I’m taking it next year (as a sophomore) and for some reason I’m really excited. I actually can’t wait to take the class. It’s weird considering there are only two weeks left of summer and I actually want it to end.

Apparently at my school the class itself is extremely hard but every single student for the past 6 years has gotten a 5 on the test. I feel ready to work hard.

^

Wow, what school is this? My school boasts the opposite.
