Official 2013 Decisions Thread!

Suzie, I do not know how many people interview, but Pitt offers many many dates and times over the course of a couple of months for the on-campus interviews, so no worries.

My scholarship letter was dated January 5th (I actually received something rapidly for once). Supposedly 100 people are invited to interview for chancellor’s and 10-15 people actually receive it.

d101 - thanks. I knew pitt staggered their interviews, which is nice. I have three others though that are doing them all on the same weekend. Obviously I can’t be in 3 places at once.

Alaskan - thanks for that info. So hopefully my scholarship letter will show up in a week or so if the timing ends up being the same as yours. That would be nice.

I asked Pitt about scholarships and they said that they are sending out letters in mid-february onward.

Here’s the exact email that they sent me:

All students who apply to the University of Pittsburgh before January 15 are given priority review for merit scholarships. Due to the availability of funds, consideration for renewable scholarships and grants is limited to freshmen entry students.

Scholarships are awarded based upon a variety of criteria: high school grades, class rank, high school curriculum, SAT/ACT scores, extracurricular activities, personal essays, and leadership characteristics. The volume of applications to the University of Pittsburgh has resulted in an extremely competitive scholarship process. This year, for example, a recipient of one of our lesser scholarships has an average SAT score of 1417 (math and critical reading only), an average grade point of 4.19, and a class rank in the top 5% in a curriculum dominated by AP/IB/Honors courses. Only eligible scholarship candidates are notified of their scholarship consideration, typically by late February.

I’m really hoping that my s gets one of those full scholarships!!

This is good news - the February date. I keep getting conflicting info on the dates. Some say it is already done. Some say it is a rolling process. Our D is out of state with the Freshman Guarantee to Pre-PT. Due to the competition to these programs she would be crazy not to go here BUT the $$ matter.

hey, i got accepted in november with a 1930 on my sats (580cr, 750math, 600writing), and a 96.5 gpa, great ecs and great letters of rec.

is there any chance of receiving a scholarship?

When my child got accepted the scholarship letter came about 4 weeks after. Perhaps you could follow-up with an e-mail asking if it still is a possibility ?

From the post above: the lesser scholarships are being awarded with an average SAT score (cr & math) of 1417 so for a full scholarship, I would imagine the score to be even higher unless you have something that Pitt wants.

In the past, their scholarships were awarded on a rolling basis thus if you applied late, you might be out of luck even if your stats were equal or above to the ones that had received scholarships – don’t know if they have “officially” changed this but plenty of students have already posted they have received the full tuition scholarship offers already.

My daughter has heard nothing about any scholarship money. Her score is 1450 (M&CR), 4.0 UW GPA…about a 4.9 weighted, She’s an AP Scholar with Honor (finished 4 tests already and is taking 4 APs this year) and the rest are Honors courses. She’s the President of several clubs, etc., etc…

She’s had lots of other academic money offers from other schools so her options are good…but she really liked Pitt so we remain hopeful that some money will be offered.

She’s contacted Pitt but has only received general replies similar to those posted above. She received her acceptance and Honors college letters within a month. She applied in early November — but she’s heard nothing since then.

AdvicePlease: This must be frustrating…obviously your daughter should be getting a scholarship from Pitt, probably a full-tuition with a chance at the Chancellors. It’s unfortunate you can’t find someone at the school that would give you the straight dope: like maybe now they want a higher SAT or that the money is all gone. I’m sure plenty of others have gotten scholarships with lesser credentials. Have you tried to call? You say your daughter has, but you may need to call yourself.

d101parent – Yes maybe I should call. If it weren’t something that she really wanted I wouldn’t care but we really liked our visit. Also my daughter was invited by Pitt to apply with no application fee…somewhat unusual from a public school. She has lots of free applications to private schools but not to public schools.

I guess maybe I’ll try to contact them as yes it is quite frustrating.

I would contact Pitt, AdvicePlease. And be a little forceful, in a nice way. Insist on some kind of a personalized answer. It shouldn’t be so hard for someone to call up her app on a computer. Emphasize how much your daughter likes Pitt.

Considering that your daughter applied in early November, she should have heard something by now. I see nothing wrong with parents getting involved in financial aid matters. What state are you from? Sometimes that makes a difference, if Pitt is trying to attract kids from particular states that may be underrepresented in the student body. Best of luck!

Yes I think I will. At this point we really need to know if it’s a school we should cross off the list…which we will definitely do if she gets no academic money.

She’s heard from many schools and been offered many very good academic scholarships including two full tuition scholarships – one that includes 1/2 board. (She’d prefer Pitt than either of these two schools.)

She’s still waiting to hear from 2 schools so she really won’t make a final decision until she hears from them in late March.

It would be good, however, to know something from Pitt or at least know if she’s been reviewed and denied.

We are from PA which is definitely not underrepresented…so maybe they’ve reached their limit for in-state money.

I would like to talk to a counselor though as the emails my daughter received were just generic and one even addressed her by the wrong name.

Can I get in… I applied to Pre-Education and I am instate
3.72 GPA
1510/2400 SAT
My EC’s include, Varsity Sports, Varsity Club, Debate Club, Student Government, Girls SOccer Manager, Grass Mowing

I have worked for 3 different jobs during high school

I will send in 2 recommendations and a good essay

AdvicePlease, you should pursue the issue and call. The same thing happened with my S four years ago. Tippy-top credentials and no word from Pitt. I called and finally they did come forth with the honors college offer and some money, but not what it should have been, especially relative to other college offers. I know of other students with lesser credentials who got way more, and are not doing nearly as well at Pitt now. Note that these others were from OOS though, while we are in-state (I think it matters). I wonder about the organization of application review! Still, Pitt is a great school and worth consideration, even if they don’t offer a lot of scholarship money.

lkf725 – Thanks – I am going to contact them. She had no problem with the honors college offer…that came right away. Actually she didn’t even have to pay for her Pitt application as she received a free application from the Honors college encouraging her to apply.

It may be a combination of being in-state and not sending her application until early November.

At any rate whatever happens will be ok as she has other good options…but good scholarship money from Pitt would definitely be great! With no scholarship money it will definitely not be an option for her – as she has other good choices.
