OFFICIAL Amherst College Class of 2014 RD Applicants

What is DiVOH? I know I have seen this term before.

Yes, my daughter is an American, but her mother is Peruvian (and now a naturalized American citizen). We live in Oregon.

Yes, she did attend the Diversity Open House weekend last fall.

Accepted class of 2014!

And I am a DivOH attendee.

DivOH is Diversity Open House. This is basically the only time Amherst officially does an overnight (and again when students get accepted in the Spring). It’s pretty selective and normally, if you got into that and attended, you’ll most likely get accepted - depending on how strong the applicant pool is, however.

That said, Amherst is huge on the diversity of their student body, so it’s pretty awesome. Would be more awesome if I actually DID DivOH. :(

When our daughter was accepted for DIVOH (it is selective both in terms of being invited and then being accepted), the letter said that 75% of DIVOH attendees who applied the previous year had been admitted. At the event, they then apologized and said that was the year previous to that. The immediately previous year only 45% of DIVOH attendees who applied were admitted. So those seem to be the proportions for the last two years. Not automatic but still pretty promising. I would expect that many DIVOH attendees get accepted who do not get “early writes.”

^ Really? Why do you say so? I went to DivOH (though, got no early write). I could really use some encouragement right now. . .

grahamj - A good friend of mine got an early write. FWIW: Asian, forwarded QB app for the RD round, strong profile but no DIVOH.

I got mine yesterday! I did the diversity open house too. Good luck to everyone else!

are the letters trickling out? did anybody get the letters today? as opposed to most of the posters saying they got it 3/1?

From messages about “early writes” posted in previous years, I have gleaned some of the following:

  1. Last year and year previous, early writes seemed to be dribbling out throughout the first week and even second week of March. I got the impression they don’t all go out on the same day; perhaps the processing takes several days to accomplish or there are several different categories of students who get them.
2. Williams and Amherst in previous years supposedly sent out about 200 early writes out of a total of about 1200 total admits (from which you have to subtract the approximately 150 who got in Early Decision). The impression I got is that they mainly go out to students Amherst thinks are likely to be getting admitted to one or more Ivy League schools. They want to get to these applicants first and convince them to come to Amherst instead of an Ivy. So only about 15-20% of all the admits are early writes.
  3. To fulfill this sort of tactical purpose, it wouldn’t make sense to give all the early writes to DIVOH folks. Some of the DIVOH folks would make this cut of students Amherst think are likely to be admitted to an Ivy but others would presumably fall in the category of students Amherst will admit but who they don’t think are likely to get into an Ivy.
  4. So I imagine that the proportion of DIVOH applicants admitted who get early writes is likely to be similar to the proportion of non-DIVOH applicants admitted who get early writes
–15-20%. Even if that proportion is double for DIVOH participants, that would imply that perhaps 30-40% of DIVOH admits are early writes. That leaves 60-70% of the DIVOH applicants who are going to get admitted getting admitted April 1 and not now.

I have no inside knowledge, however. This is pure speculation. But that’s what makes sense to me. So, if you are a DIVOH participant who thought you had a good shot at Amherst but the Ivies were a pretty big reach, you may well be in the category of DIVOH students who are not getting early writes but who will be admitted April 1. If my numbers are anywhere close to right, about 12% of total admits are ED, about 16% are “early writes,” and about 72% of all admits occur on April 1. So, don’t despair, DIVOH or non-DIVOH, more than 2/3 of the total admits aren’t going out until April 1. I think.

thanks for the clarification!

Wow! I wish I was a DiVOH :-/

^Me toooooooooooo.
