*** Official AP Biology Thread 2012-2013 ***

I got a 5 and I’m ecstatic, although I seriously have no idea how I got it. I screwed up the chi square analysis completely and randomly made up something for another FRQ because I didn’t know what to do. I also guessed a lot of the MC and changed my answer for the grid-ins a bazillion times. Our school doesn’t offer the AP Bio course and I started studying for AP Bio from the Barron’s book maybe a week before the exam. There are tons of really smart people from my school who were studying for much longer than I was and only got a 4. I didn’t actually even use half the stuff I learnt from the prep books. Maybe I’m just good at inferencing, or had some really darn good luck. Either way, a 4 or a 3 on AP Bio is pretty good considering this year’s curve :)

I got a 5, and I feel extremely lucky. I took AP Statistics this year as well and as a result did not find the Chi-Square / null hypothesis question difficult, but seeing how in my AP Bio class we only briefly dealt with calculating Chi-Square without even discussing the null hypothesis, I can sympathize with those who weren’t as fortunate. I also wonder why the organelle question on the free response was the one with the lowest average score - my guess is that some misread the question and gave possible names for the cells rather than a probable function? It was sort of like Q3 on the World History exam in 2011, the one that talked about the rise of certain empires.

Yup. Might as well enroll in community college buddy!

I got a 4 whic is pretty damn good considering I didn’t do half of the essays

I know that a lot of people had trouble with the FRQs. Does anybody know why they changed the curve so drastically this year?

Probably because college students did so well. The cut-offs for tests is based on the ability of the college students that they had take the test, and probably from seeing some of the tests from those in high-schools. The cut-offs for 5s (and probably for the rest of the scores) were pretty high because of this, yet most high-schoolers were able to meet the cut-off for 3s, but not that high for 5s.

@MedicalBoy you’re probably a frail little boy who is raging over the lack of CB 5s received.

I got a 4 and was devastated since my college only accepts a 5 for credit. After seeing the new score distributions I was hanging onto a frail thread of hope that my college might somehow make an exception this year and take a 4 xD

I feel it is kind of unfair that this year’s test was so different. I took a practice AP from the year before and breezed through effortlessly. I’m conflicted as to whether the higher AP standards are a good thing or a bad thing.

My teacher kept saying how the AP this year was probably even easier since they gave you more time and less MC questions, and I kind of went in expecting that. It wasn’t really easier or harder…just different. You kind of had to think a little more though.

scoring guidelines are up!

So which review book was the best? Barron’s 4th edition or Cliffs 4th edition?

which review book was the best?

Barron’s 4th edition or Cliffs 4th edition? Which is better? Should I wait for the 2014 PR book?
