Official Biomedical Sciences Interviews/Acceptances 2009

Thanks deianira & PhD-Bound (btw - those are some impressive stats)

I thought I would put up a status report for future generations:

Microbiology or appropriate umbrella program
Applied: Harvard, Duke, UNC, Vanderbilt, Baylor, Michigan, Minnesota, UT Houston
Interviews: Duke, UNC, Vanderbilt, Minnesota, UT Houston
Rejections: Michigan (this hurt my ego)

uGPA 3.3
gGPA 3.7
7 years of research experience
1 publication, 2 in preparation, conferences, abstracts, poster sessions etc

Hi all,

I am a senior at a mid-size applying to Microbiology and Immunology Programs (interested in microbial pathogenesis) and I came across this thread so I thought I would add my own stats:

GPA: 3.46
GRE: 1220 (I think, took it about a year ago)
Applied: Rockefeller, NYU, JHU, UPenn, Duke
Interviews: NYU, Duke
Denied: none

For those of you who are worried about the process, most biomedical programs’ number one factor is research experience. If you have experience and are able to communicate not only what you did in the lab but how it contributed to the overall focus of your lab you will be an impressive applicant.

Hey everyone,

Would any of you guys who previously applied to the following programs mind posting your stats, where you applied and whether or not you got in, etc.? I know I should just sit back and wait, but this is killing me. I was recently premed and changed my entire career path and am completely out of the loop as far as what is considered a competitive applicant for these programs. I applied to Harvard (BBS), UCB (MCB), UPenn (CAMB), MIT (Biology), Caltech (Biology), Stanford (Biosciences), Princeton (Molecular Biology), UCLA (ACCESS). Thanks in advance, I really appreciate it. Good luck to everyone

I’ve been following this thread and just thought I would represent the lower end of Academia. It might relieve some of you to know individuals with much lower grades than you are applying =)

GPA: 2.9
GRE: 550/550/4
Applied: UNC (PHD),CMU (MS),Boston University (MS)
Interviews: none
Denied: none (so far)

I graduated with a B.S. in Computer Science from a NY state university then worked professionally as a software developer for 3 years. I am looking to go back for Bioinformatics/Computational Biology. I plan on retaking the GRE’s in a few months (I know I can do better, kinda choked on this one) and getting some more experience before applying again.

I have a little experience working for a biomathamatician to make him some web based applications. My name appears on 2 of his publications.

MDUFF: we may be higher scoring than you, but a lot of us Biosciences majors suck at computational, so I bet you have an edge there :)

I applied in 2006 to Harvard BBS (where I am now), MIT Biology, Michigan PIBS, UCLA ACCESS, Caltech Biology, UCSF Tetrad, Berkeley MCB, and Stanford Biosciences.

GPA: 3.3 (double major in biology and neuroscience at MIT)
GRE: 740V/800Q/5.5 AW; 890 biology subject test
Research: A summer at the NIH, then three years of term-time and summer research with a high-profile lab at MIT. One abstract, plus 6th author on a paper that was at the time in revision for Cell (but ultimately rejected).
Letters: My PI, one of my class professors who knew me well outside of class, and my NIH postdoc.

I got interviews everywhere, and I was accepted everywhere but UCSF Tetrad (where I said some really remarkably dumb things in one of my interviews). I picked Harvard BBS and am now a G3.

anyone hear from Georgetown neuro/biol yet? Or Stanford Biosciences?

Hey D -

where else did you apply? any interviews besides the one at hopkins?

Got Cornell - Sloan Kettering by e-mail! My first invite so far.

Congrats PhD bound & Penicillin!

Sooooo jealous :(

Thanks phanta, judging from previous years Cornell definitely sends out multiple rounds of invites, don’t lose hope yet.

deianira, judging from last year’s thread, Stanford Biosciences should invite starting next week.

Phd-Bound?

Did you do your undergrds in US? You have 4 fulll year research experience which is really impressive. Are you working as a research technician?

My advisor is on the Stanford admissions committee, and told me they would meet next Monday to make the final decisions. So, I wouldn’t worry if you haven’t heard back yet.

I suppose I should finally post my experiences so far:

Undergrad: Small liberal arts college (biochem) / GPA: 3.37
GRE: 560V/690Q
Research: 3 years / 4 papers

Applied: Harvard, Case Western BSTP, Albert Einstein, Michigan, Michigan State, UCSD, Boston University,
Interviews: Case, Michigan State- Biochem, and Albert Einstein
Rejected: Michigan

Good Luck Everyone…

leukemia, I did my undergrad from the top school in Canada, and I did work as a research tech.

You have a good profile. You will be admitted the toppest programs you have chosen. Remember to give up others in a timely manner, once you get your best choice. lol.

kupolu
Were you referring to a particular program at Stanford thats meeting on monday? Do all Stanford Bioscience invites go out at the same time or do they go by individual departments? Your post made me relax a bit though.

Hi PhD-Bound:

I saw that you posted that you have an interview at Baylor COM (MCB) in the end of Jan. Congrats! I’ll be there too.

good luck everyone…may all your wishes be granted
