Official Biomedical Sciences Interviews/Acceptances 2009

Catsrus:

I, too, applied to Harvard chembio. Haven’t heard yet, and don’t expect to until late Jan. into mid Feb. Yesterday received a call that I have been accepted to Stanford.

Ok, now I am really starting to worry. I applied to Rockefeller, Stanford Biosci, and UPenn CAMB and haven’t received anything.

My stats are: 4 yrs undergrad research in 2 really good labs, REU at another institution, good recs, a 680 V/780 Q/ 5.5 W GRE and no subject test, and a 3.2 GPA (biochem major)… which I think is the worst thing on my app.

I gather that S, and R have not started giving out notices yet, but Penn has, and I am getting a bit weary. Will my GPA screw over my chances?

Husband got an email today from Yale for the microbiology program. Interview Feb. 12th-15th. So excited!

Mirobiology Program PhD:
Applied: U Wisconsin, U Alabama Birmingham, U Washington, Yale, Dartmouth, Arizona State, Virginia Tech., Vanderbilt

Interview: U Wisconsin, Yale, Dartmouth, U Alabama (he’s actually there right now)

Rejected: None

Hey fayrlite - I am (probably) going to visit the neuro program at UAB some time in February. I would love to hear how your husband’s visit (albeit to a different program) was. I wonder if it is worth seriously considering if I get in to the other schools at which I will be interviewing (Penn, Vanderbilt, UW-Seattle, UC-Boulder)? How is he viewing it compared to his other choices?

First rejection, but not too unexpected. From UWashington MCB program. I don’t know why I even wasted my money on the app. fee, they specifically said they accept maybe 1 of their undergrads a year and they discourage their undergrads from applying! Oh well.

My stats:

uGPA 3.89 at well-ranked, research-oriented state school in MCB and ecology/evolution
gGPA 4.0 at same (MS focusing on pathogen evolution)
GRE 770Q/570V/4.5W Bio 830 (92%)

3.5 yrs undergrad research in 2 labs, 1 manuscript yet to be accepted anywhere
2 years full-time for the MS on HIV evolution, 1 pub (2nd author in Nature)
A few research talks, one at large conference

Applied: UCSF BMS, Berkeley infectious diseases (I have a solid Plan B)
Interview at UCSF (invited Dec. 19th, be there mid-Feb)

This forum saved my sanity after I heard from UCSF so quickly and then nothing but silence from Berkeley.

I’ve only seen one other person here who applied to Berkeley’s infectious diseases program… anyone know of a better thread for that?

phanta, I just got that unfortunate email from UW MCB as well. I have 2 yrs research experience here at Fred Hutchinson, but my GPA was a touch low and I was an undergrad at UW, so maybe this outcome is not too suprising. Guess I am headed out of state next year! Good luck :)

Just got a call from Harvard BBS! Recruitment weekends Feb. 12-15 and sometime else in early March. The professor seemed to indicate they’re calling in waves, though, so don’t worry if you haven’t heard back yet.

Interview at University of Minnesota Neuroscience

kupolu, may i ask when you submitted your application? thanks!

Did any international applicants-those outside North America hear back from Yale BBS, Emory, Duke or Vanderbilt IGP?

i got my first rejection from UWash MCB too today!! no other news so far… i’m an international student… it feels awful after getting an email like that… u just somehow zoom into the word “unfortunately”… hate the disappointing feeling… just hope i dont hv to get used to it…

Just got an e-mail for Weill Cornell Immunology and Microbial Pathogenesis interview on Feb. 18th…though I don’t think anyone else on this board even applied to the same programs I did. I’ll keep updating just in case…

I submitted my application on Dec. 7, which I think was a day before the deadline.

kupolu… what r ur stats like??

I just got an invite to interview at Weill Cornell (immunology and microbial pathogenesis), so, so far its

Applied: Cornell, UPenn (CAMB), Columbia (CMBS), NYU (open), Albert Einstein, Mount Sinai, Rockefeller

Interviews: Cornell (1/9), UPenn, Columbia, NYU, Albert Einstein(12/24), Mount Sinai (1/7)
(i don’t remember the other dates…)

Acceptances: Rockefeller (1/7)

I really hate the idea of posting stats because it just makes people insecure and nervous… but I will say for the sake of anybody worried about things like GREs and publications (like I was after reading this board!)… My subject test scores were low enough that everybody on this board would have told me not to send them, and I do not have any papers, posters, conferences…

To WaYaDuDK: I got acceptance from Yale BBS and an interview from Wash U DBBS before Christmas. My track is computational biology, if it helps. I am a Canadian applicant.

I just want to tell Canadian applicants to hang on. Chances are that you will get interviews if you have good credentials. International status will not affect admission chances if you come from Canada.

UPDATE!

IMMUNOLOGY (or umbrella program for schools without immunology programs)

Applied: Harvard, UCSF, Scripps, Rockefeller, U Washington, Weill Cornell, UT Southwestern, UMass Medical, Boston U, Tufts

Rejected: UCSF
Accepted: none

Interview: UT Southwestern, Scripps, U Washington, Weill Cornell, UMass Medical

What a day of highs and lows! Just got my first interview invitation a few hours after my first rejection.

Anyone going to Albert Einstein Feb 2 & 3? (1st of 3 interview dates)

Congrats on the Harvard BBS acceptance Kupolu, hope to see you there.
